Posting to Russia: Yes, I do post to Russia. But delivery can take up to 4 to 6 weeks from the UK. So please be patient. I will submit a tracking number to the winning bidder, and when the packet arrives there it can be followed online using the Russian post website.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Van Morrison’s sixth post Them album and another comparable to the masterpiece Astral Weeks. The famously distinctive cover with Morrison looking a little forelorn and troubled sitting on the church steps, his trousers even have a hole. But the contents within this lovely cover must rank amongst the finest he ever made. Again like Astral Weeks, this album is difficult to pigeon-hole, it’s a blend of rock, soul and late-night jazz, Saint Dominic’s Preview remains one of his most enigmatic releases. The opener ‘Jackie Wilson Said’, is an uptempo and vibrant beginning, his tribute to the great soul singer that was later covered very successfully by Dexy’s Midnight Runners. But the two long compositions dominate this fabulous album. 12-String acoustic guitar driven epics ‘Listen to the Lion’ (Ronnie Montrose accompanies) and the sublime ‘Almost Independence Day’, where again Morrison’s vocal improvisations are back to their stunning best. Alternatively whispering, then powerfully pleading and extolling. An album of intoxicating and hypnotic performances, its relative failure initially again was surprising. Beautifully recorded with a clear and detailed sound. This still very early second issue copy does it fine justice and appears modestly played. Any real music lover and vinyl collector will really treasure this vintage Van-the-Man classic.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A single unlaminated format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Shorewood, includes the plain white inner sleeve. Second issues did not include the insert.

Cover Front: One of the classic fronts and here looking very nice. The odd edge chip, any marks or creases few, very light with very low visibility. No sticker marks or light fading, this front that overall remains attractive.

Cover Back: Any blemishes on this back are again small and faint mostly seen under light as gently dull spotting. A few fine edge creases again, but the lack of ugly ring wear on this dark back is always a plus.

Top Edge: Straight with only a tiny few small chips/rubs.

Bottom Edge: Mostly light patchy rubbing, most near right end.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still quite sharp with any thickening light as seen more critically end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with only a little gentle compression near the centre. The text nigh-on fully present with any hint of rubbing gentle and light as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubbing light with very fine shape retained with no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: Overall, an impressive and attractive all-round example of this classic, but wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find better. With only mild clues of its age, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): a solid plain white unlined inner which is gently aged. A little mild creasing and the edges have tiny central splits, almost too small making them worthy of repair.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): arguably better. A fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy modestly plays on all the evidence with any surface marks light, mostly wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. Viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a nice record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – the odd sporadic tick being very difficult to avoid on largely acoustic music – it has no tracking issues*. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
