SOUL FLUTES Trust in Me. Used vintage gatefold LP in Very Good+/Very Good+ condition. A&M Records Catalog # SP 3009; 1968
Condition: Vinyl has some areas of discoloration, but free of significant scratches. Heavy duty LP jacket has some minor stains, slight ring impression on back. Original inner sleeve promoting other A&M releases of the period included.
Behind the Music: This item is as about as close to “smooth Jazz” (gulp!) as anything in my music collection. I reckon I bought it in early 1970s after I exited US Army. Doubtless my attention was grabbed by the outrageous cover art, and the involvement of legendary arranger Don Sebesky. The latter has been known to do a full blown jazzy orchestral arrangement for material like Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” (for Hubert Laws, if memory serves), but the musical forces here are smaller than that. The only name among the flutists I recognize is that of Romeo Penque. This project was produced for A&M by Creed Taylor prior to his founding his own CTI label. This assures a quality product overall, even if the music is less than earth-shattering. Among the usual suspects involved in the sessions at Rudy Van Gelder’s legendary studio: Herbie Hancock (on harpsichord among other keyboards); Eric Gale and ‘Bucky’ Pizzarelli—guitars; Grady Tate—drums; Ray Barretto—percussion; and the unbeatable Ron Carter—bass. [See also my listing for Ron Carter: All Blues on CTI Records.] In an effort to find an audience beyond the tiny segment of the population serious about Jazz, versions of “Scarborough Fair,” “Day-o” (!), and “Try a Little Tenderness” are here. Plus a treatment of “Bachianas Brasilieras #5” by Heitor Villa Lobos. Joan Baez had recorded a version of that—originally written for a cluster of cellists—in the 1960s as well.
