Description

MINNIE RIPERTON: Adventures in Paradise. Used vintage LP (RE) in Very Good+/Very Good+ condition. (Originally Columbia Recs. 1975)/Capitol Recs. LP Catalog # SN-16146; 1980 (reissue)

Condition: Vinyl has no real flaws. I have never seen this dark green label for Capitol Records previously. Jacket exhibits shelf wear at the corners and along the top and a few very minor wrinkles. Colors remain true and vibrant.

Behind the Music: Allow me to explain my “relationship” with Minnie Riperton. “It’s complicated” as they say. Once upon a time, boys and girls, there was a Rock band called Rotary Connection. They did “cover” versions of other folks’ music. Truth be told, I thought they were one of the worst bands I’d ever heard! Fast-forward some years and I hear Rahsaan Roland Kirk recording an instrumental version of Minnie’s “Lovin’ You.” Bam! If that melody was good enough for Kirk, it was more than good enough for me. When I checked out Riperton’s original, and then her “Perfect Angel,” I ascended almost to Heaven (Music Heaven) myself. So to bring this full circle, it turns out Ms. Riperton was a member of Rotary Connection! She could hit simply amazing high notes—legendarily high!—and does so frequently on this album. The feel of this album is kind of a hybrid between R&B and “pure Pop.” Guitarist Larry Carlton did the arrangements, and the musicianship on display is nothing less than supremely accomplished. Tom Scott, Joe Sample, Jim Gordon, Dean Parks, Carlton himself are among those in the band. All veterans of Jazz-inflected Pop Music sessions. This recording could serve as a Master Class in “how to do it right.” Listening to this album for the first time in decades while I digitized it for my own music collection, I was amazed at the quality of the work here. It is a great tragedy that Minnie Riperton succumbed to cancer at age 31 in 1979. The actress Maya Rudolph is her daughter! [NOTE: As of Dec. 9, 2025 there were only two copies of this album for sale on Discogs. The number of members reporting they “Want” this item vastly exceeds those who “Have” it. Asking price is $50 for one and $219 (!!) for the other, a Japanese copy. I think that makes my asking price very reasonable.]

  • About the seller: I am downsizing my personal belongings, and you can benefit. Unless otherwise indicated, all my records have been owned by me alone and treated with loving care. No significant scratches or gouges. I have been a Jazz radio broadcaster for 30+ years, but my musical tastes are wide-ranging. You will see this as my listed offerings grow. New items added weekly, check back often!

[NOTE: I clean all LPs with the Record Doctor device, but you will likely find my items rather dusty when they arrive. I have a lot of static electricity in my house, and dust always instantly returns to record surfaces after cleaning! Sorry about that!]

PLEASE NOTE: I will not sell anything for less than $9.99, as it’s not worth packaging the item up and taking it to the Post Office. Sure, you can buy an LP for 50 cents or less at a yard sale, but will it have been cared for like mine? Not likely.

FREE SHIPPING to U.S. address for purchase of any item of $100 or more.
