Description

JOHN COLTRANE: Live at Birdland. Used ABC-Impulse! LP gatefold vintage pressing (not a reissue) in Near Mint/Near Mint condition; Impulse! Catalog # Stereo A-50; c. 1964

Condition: Vinyl has occasional patches of discoloration (no effect on the sound), reasonably quiet surfaces. Packaging is gatefold heavy duty cardboard. I would have bought this about ten years after its initial release. Note the green paper inner sleeve and green record label. This assures you this is a vintage pressing, though I can’t claim it is from the initial batch. The Impulse! Jazz catalog, featuring numerous valuable historical recordings, changed corporate ownership multiple times over the decades, is now part of Universal Music Group.

Behind the Music: Recorded live at Birdland in the Big Apple in 1963, this is The Classic Coltrane Quartet in action: ‘Trane’ on saxophones, McCoy Tyner piano, Jimmy Garrison bass, and Elvin Jones drums. Note that “Afro Blue,” a mainstay in Coltrane performances, is mistakenly credited to the leader here. It was, in fact, written by legendary Latin percussionist Mongo Santamaria. The selections: Afro Blue; I Want to Talk About You; The Promise; Alabama; Your Lady. “Alabama” was written in response to the murder of four young black children in the church bombing in Birmingham in 1963.
