Description
VINCE GUARALDI: "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" (Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus). Used Mobile Fidelity Half-Speed Remastered LP in Mint/Mint condition; Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab Catalog # MFSL 1-112; 1965 (original LP release)
Condition: Vinyl essentially Mint (bought new, played by me all of twice); Packaging still pristine. Includes original cardboard insert promoting Mobile Fidelity releases and soft poly inner sleeve for the LP.
Behind the Music: The title of this album is a bit misleading, as only the compositions on Side One are related to the famous 1959 movie Black Orpheus, a modernized telling of the tale of “Orpheus in the Underworld.” The film was made in Brazil during Carnaval time (called Mardi Gras in the US) and won the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Brazilians take this festival—Carnaval, not so much Cannes!—which is followed by Lent, very seriously indeed. Quite a party! I should think the original Fantasy Records release was simply called Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus, but the Guaraldi original “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” was one of those rare things—a smash instrumental hit on Top 40 Radio. I can still recall hearing this simply beautiful/beautifully simple melody on the radio when I was a teenager. Mr. Guaraldi had a way with infectious, irresistible melodies, as witnessed by his famous music for some of the Charlie Brown Specials, especially for Christmas. Side Two of the LP starts with the title tune and includes the well known “Moon River” and “Since I Fell For You.” Vince’s work at the piano is accompanied here by Jazz veteran Monte Budwig on acoustic bass, and Colin Bailey on drums.
Now that you have the backstory, all that remains is for you to buy this record at my reasonable asking price!
