Description
So, we all know the true 1st press of this LP is on the Vertigo Swirl label - Fact! But by summer 1971 Byron's deal with Philips/Vertigo was over and he set up on the new label - Bronze. This particular pressing dates from autumn 1971 [November to be precise] and is a superb solid pressing. There are a number of differences in this pressing that set it apart from typical Bronze pressings. Most notably the label shows two concurrent catalogue numbers - The new Island number ILPS 9142 and the old Vertigo number 6360006. And in the deadwax is the confirmation that this cut, along with 1st issue Vertigo swirl copies, were pressed by Philips. 6360006 2Y/1 ^420 and ILPS9142-A. Also, check out the design of the labels - no other Bronze copies look like this. Blue text on a yellow background - I suspect that this was an initial design which was then superseded by the typical brown on yellow [which is much easier to read]. There are also differences in the publishing credits with 'Plymouth' getting a mention. Now, take a look at the cover - This a classic top-loader like the originals, but there are a few notable differences. Firstly, the Island logo can be seen in the top-left corner. Also, and this is quite a big difference from the standard covers, the interior shot of the band is in black and white - NOT COLOUR. The sizing of the image is also different to other copies - it is 'zoomed in'. The text on the left side is right up against the edge. Possibly this cover is a proof copy as they finalised the design. Either way it is certainly an interesting copy....And in addition one that plays blindingly well too!
Vinyl (Ex) Shiny like new and has clearly only seen light use. Under close inspection we couldn't make out more than a couple of very light marks. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals an, at least, EXCELLENT level of playback with one deviation. Intros and inbetweens are quiet and the audio comes across with fantastic clarity. These Phillips pressing are just amazing - great tonal balance and resolution. I can't imagine many other copies are going to top this - it really is superb playback. Interference is minimal with just a touch of light static in the occasional place. The deviation is a light mark toward the end of side 2 which causes a couple of light ticks. But other than that this a very high standard of playback.
Cover (Ex) Again this cover has been very carefully looked after. The only vaguely noticeable deterioration is a touch of laminate lift on the rear. But both front and rear remain nice and shiny with minimal edge wear. The spine is 100% intact and overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
