Description

Undocumented special heavy-duty album of 15 US government V-Discs entitled MODERN AMERICAN COMPOSERS(circa 1946?).
Contents are mostly classical pieces recorded by the NBC Orchestra, Boston Pops, LA Philharmonic, etc.  There are even 3 sides of salon music conducted by FRANK SINATRA!

I have owned this set for several decades, but despite all my research efforts(even at the Smithsonian AND the National Archives) I have not been able to ascertain any production info or purpose for this set.  I have only seen one other copy in my lifetime.
The V-Discs were produced monthly for about 6 years(from late-1943 until mid-1949).  Famous musical artists of the era(like Sinatra) donated their services to make special recordings that were pressed(by RCA) onto vinyl-like discs that were shipped monthly to US troops fighting in Europe and the South Pacific during World War II(to give them a taste of home and to boost morale).
When the war ended(in Fall, 1945), troops were ordered to surrender the V-discs(since they were government property).  The V-Discs were ordered destroyed and the V-Disc program was severely curtailed until it was finally discontinued in Spring, 1949.
Nevertheless, some of our returning soldiers were able to sneak out a few V-Discs and took them home as souvenirs.  Still, I cannot fathom why such a deluxe set as this was ordered designed and manufactured.  Perhaps as a government "thank you" to certain high-ranking military officers(Captains, Generals, etc) for their service during the war???  One can only speculate.  If you(or someone you know) has any further info about this, I'd love to hear from you!

Records appear to be MINT-(virtually flawless...not even any spindle scuffs).  The fabric-bound album is VG(slight wear on corners and a bit of writing in the upper right cover).  Strong, intact spine and seams.  A few of the pockets appear to have been slight chewed(by moths)?

Shipping: $20 media mail because it is a very heavy(but delicate) set.  Combined shipping on multiple items.

I am downsizing and I am hoping this cherished collectible will go to an appreciative new owner/home!   Questions are welcome! Thanks for your interest and please check out my other offerings!
