Wonderworld was never as bad as critics painted it. As a complete album performance, it's second to none in their career, with a confident energy reminiscent of Look At Yourself, which set the bar for hard rock of that era. Considering the low state of morale in the band at the time Wonderworld was made, it’s far better than it might have been. Stepping valiantly into the breach that had opened between singer David Byron and Ken Hensley, Mick Box and Gary Thain deliver some of the best performances of their careers. Box’s mastery over both the wah-wah and electric slide guitar, particularly on ‘I Don’t Mind,’ and Thain’s lyrical, pulsating bass lines really shine here. Talking about stepping up when it counts. In the documentary, Uriah Heep: The Ken Hensley Years, Box states matter-of-factly: “Just put us in a room and give us the material and we’ll put the unique stamp of Uriah Heep on it.” Hensley often either vanishes into the mix or seems absent from the studio, unsurprisingly given the level of tension in the band at the time. To his credit, Byron steps up to the mic and delivers when it counts, as in the gently wistful performance of ‘The Easy Road,’ proving yet again what a superb singer he was, and how sadly overlooked compared to his peers in rock music.

And as far as the relentless comparisons of this album with Sweet Freedom, I’ve never seen these as remotely complementary records. With the exception of ‘Stealin’,’ and the title track, the rest of that album merely seems rambling and unfocused, especially compared with the disciplined, evocative soundscapes of their masterpieces, Look At Yourself, Demons and Wizards and The Magician’s Birthday. Besides being the last album of the band’s classic line-up, Wonderworld is really the last album Uriah Heep made that represented the band in its full glory. In that respect, for this writer at least, the album has a bittersweet quality to it.

(b)         The record is  apparently pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)         The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
