Label/Format: Bronze – Very early issue on the new label. The being the ‘Age of Man’ format with the Island i credits (please see label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with only very light/light spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: ILPS 9152.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. Slightly above average for it’s era and actually a little heavier than the last Vertigo copy I sold.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The Vertigo spiral originals are getting scarcer and scarcer and command large prices. Hence I have no qualms in offering an early Island credited Bronze copy. These I have found to be more consistently better pressed and give the more ‘average’ collector a change to experience this album on vinyl. The Island credited Bronzes are not that easily found either.

Original Year of Release: 1971, this pressing would be from 1972-73.

Brief Info: Second and last album Uriah Heep that was originally issued on this most famous and sort-after progressive Vertigo label before changing to Bronze. Like most all their albums, issued to scorn and hostility by the critics of the day, its almost miraculous how this band survived and actually thrived selling millions of albums. This record is less commercial than most within their catalogue, the epic title track uses brass and woodwinds and some found it ‘difficult’ – personally I think it works well and this is actually one of my favourite Uriah Heep albums. It’s a record that can wear badly if not treated well, the brass on ‘Salisbury’ can often distort with clipping and echo and only a small percentage will play near ‘perfectly’ these days – this copy plays very well indeed with barely anything unwanted. The cover too is as fragile as the record, the back not too dissimilar to Led Zeppelin II with it’s brown ink. An all-round nice copy and it could be just right for those needing a copy without deeping deep for a Swirl copy.

Cover Grade and Format: Near Excellent. An unlaminated gatefold format with a flat matt finish. Printed and made in England by Howard’s and also includes the Island credits.

Cover Front: A few light and minor handling marks and faint surface creases that hardly show. Still generally clean, vibrant and attractive, not an easy one like this.

Cover Back: Very light and minor (in terms of this cover) record impression and minor rim rubbing. Slight creasing only and any rubbing to the intolerant brown ink light and faint. The lack of deeply penetrating ringwear is always a bonus on this one.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The one-and-only female owner put her first name near one corner in very tiny, fine and neat ink (‘Lynn’), blink and you will miss it. One faint crease only, that apart, little else to fault. Any set-off on the white areas that rest upon black when closed is tiny and very faint indeed.

Top & Bottom Edges: Any rubbing minimal, light and faint, any present patchy and mild. More near the corners

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on the back edge as the front is sealed.

Spine and Text: A lovely spine too with any rubbing fine and faint and very little of. Solid, quite thick, straight, uncompressed and folded square, both right edges meet up near perfectly together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn. Any rubbing mostly confined to the very ends but hardly major there either. This too has the ILPS Island catalogue number.

Corners: All have tip rubs, mostly small but some moderate. Fine shape is mostly retained.

Cover Summary: Always a difficult cover, so many are better hidden away in racks awaiting a better one. This is one that can be held, viewed and enjoyed. Not perfect, but still a very attractive one with far fewer blemishes and wear than most.

The Inner Sleeve: Near Mint, a plain white unlined inner that almost reminds of new.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Again, near excellent, a copy with ultra fine light hairlines and fine surface blemishes but have no sound. The lady owner was quite particular about her records, she told me she lightly cleaned them with a soft cloth to remove surface dust. This will always cause these ultra fine surface blemishes, any friction to the playing surfaces not matter how soft the cloth will do this as the dust itself is abrasive – fact. My honest view on cleaning records – use only a professional quality machine. Anyway, no harm done, this is still a fine visual copy overall that is clean, with good shine, jet black and very solidly pressed. All points to a copy very modestly played it should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This somewhat elusive title exceeds its visual grading with barely anything to fault. A very difficult record to say the least and very prone to all types of sound faults and distortion. This EMI-pressing for Island plays very well with fine, clear and bold sound which lacks that irritating crackle and clipping that affects so many. Expecially those earlier Vertigos that were often subjected to unworthy equipment. The intricate and complex title track is very demanding with rasping brass but this gives a very sound account of itself with the music focused and precise. No noteworthy pops or clicks were noted and this is a well pressed record overall. Few copies, whatever the label will outperform this Bronze pressing to any major degree I feel sure. Little, if indeed anything really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this record. This copy will prove quite difficult to find significantly better and do not dismiss the Island credited pressings, they are not as common as you may think. I copy I can highly recommend.

What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
