Label/Format: Vertigo – First press format with the full Spiral format and original large spiral on side two. These have matt, smooth surfaces and are seldom seen this clean, side two so often acquire grubbiness. This one has barely aged and still very white indeed.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, still fresh and highly attractive with light+ and moderate spindle marks that show little unless looked for under angled light. Clearly played a few times, but this lovely first issue record offers very clean and impressive sound with little unwanted. A difficult record in the Swirl catalogue with brass on side two that often clips and loses focus, even with crackle and distortionk. This copy has avoided these common issues and is one of the most satisfying copies I have heard for a long time.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 132 grams. A very good solid weight for this record and label.

Rarity: Getting very scarce as an original – like most on this most collectable label. Most of these are found on the Bronze reissues or second spiral format with the small logo. Being a 1971 album, large spiral logo copies on side two are rarer, the format changed soon afterwards to the small spiral logo and outline Vertigo format.

Brief Info: The second and last album Uriah Heep that was originally issued on this most famous and sort-after progressive Vertigo label before changing to Bronze. Like most all their albums, issued to scorn and hostility by the critics of the day, it’s almost miraculous how this band survived and actually thrived selling millions of albums. This record is less commercial with a distinctly more ‘progressive’ edge than most within their catalogue. The epic title track uses brass and woodwinds and some found it ‘difficult’ – personally I think it works well and this is actually one of my favourite Uriah Heep albums as it dares to be ‘different’. It’s a record that can wear badly if not treated well, the brass on ‘Salisbury’ can often distort with clipping and loss of focus, and only a small percentage will play anything like near ‘perfect’ these days – this vintage original has little to fault overall. The cover is as fragile as the record and is rarely seen devoid of heavy rubbing, ring wear and creasing. This has less wear than most I have seen – but, there is an issue. Like many owners from way back, he decided to put clear tape on the edges to protect them. Often done by the more careful collectors for preservation of the edges, but over time, the tape dries out and peels off leaving a dull and end-line. On this one, it was applied to the right (opening area) and left (spine) edges, this also seen inside on the same edges and on the fold hinge. So clearly this is not for the cover purist or more serious Swirl connoisseur. That said, a major plus is the total lack of wear on the fragile and vulnerable spine that is little short of perfect. Arguably, I think this is Uriah Heep’s rarest and least commercial album and it did not sell in vast numbers, it is getting harder and harder to find all the time, and those that do surface are often trashed. So this fine example – even with the tape marks – should not be dismissed lightly. First pressings with a clean record are difficult.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): with tape dull strips on the aforementioned edges. You must decide yourself what grading this issie merits, I have graded on actual wear itself. A very wear-prone unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England and includes the much rarer original ‘WARNING— Copyright subsists in all Vertigo Recordings’ text. This later changed with the word ‘VERTIGO’ dropped and changed to ‘this label’. The back top right has the 6360028 number and VO Price Code within a box, includes the date-coded (0171) Spiral inner sleeve, which translates to January 1972 making this copy one of the earliest ever made.

Cover Front: The left and right edges have tape residue lines (that is viewed as seen on my picture). The residue lines have caused no surface pulling or damage, and that is same for the entire cover, so I will not repeat this again. There is an edge rub near the top left corner with any others tiny, few and faint. A few very gentle and light surface blemishes seen under angled light. But the lack of creasing and ring wear, as well as the deep rich vibrant colour retention are major pluses. No sticker tears either, and even with the tape marks, this is one of the better front for this difficult and unforgiving cover I have seen.

Cover Back: Again this tape marks on the same edges. With a lot of solid brown ink colour, just like Led Zeppelin II, this wear equally as badly as that more famous cover. This has moderate rubbing on the bottom edge area but little else. Remarkably, it has avoided ring wear and has barely any creasing. The odd tiny surface chip being critical, but the tape lines apart, this will never prove easy to find much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Tape line marks on the left, right and on the central fold hinge. That apart, not a great deal else to really fault.

Top Edges: A little very patchy rubbing, not a great deal really which is quite unusual.

Bottom Edges: Moderate and less patchy rubbing, these storage edges rarely escape.

Right Edge(s), and Type: More unusually, the record is stored inside the front of this gatefold. The back is closed with a real tucked and folded edge that is straight and barely worn – the tape does have some advantages. The open front is clean and very sharp with hardly any wear and thickening. There are no cover enhancements or trimming.

Spine and Text: Simply immaculate: yes the tape has left no residue on the spine surface and has protected it so it looks practically as made. Solid, very straight with no compression or tilt. All text pristine and beautifully centred. Also folded square, so the edges are parallel and flush, always good news for the more discerning. Lastly, the tape of course protected the ultra vulnerable and delicate folds which are also immaculate.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs on the right ones. The spine pair are unworn and look superb.

Cover Summary: A difficult and scarce cover with the original Vertigo copyright warning inside. Clearly the tape residue marks may be an issue for some, but overall, this will still take some beating – all very respectable and still attractive overall.

The Spiral Inner: NEAR EXCELLENT: little real wear but it has moderate edge toning/gum browning but no creasing and no splits or tears to the edges. One small nick on the two crisp and neat window circles I carefully repaired and it hardly even registers. The polylining is solid and tight and has a clear window. With so many of these written-off or missing altogether, this inner is a fine one and at 41-years-old it has earned the right to have aged a little I think. Importantly, it has the 0171 (January 1971) date-code, the album, issued in February of that year.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Only under bright angled light do any light surface marks show, mostly these are ultra fine and whispy. Visually an impressive early Spiral, this should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive, very early Spiral record plays up to, and most exceeds its visual grading with little to fault. A very difficult record to say the least and very prone to all types of sound faults and distortion. This has no clipping and even the brass-work on side two is crisp and focused – indeed one of the very few examples I have heard that remains so on this somewhat intolerant album. The intricate and complex title track is very demanding with rasping brass and woodwinds, but this gives a very solid account of itself and will give most Spiral copies a run for it money with minimal unwanted to the complex sound. The odd sporadic click or surface sound is near impossible to avoid totally, but few available copies will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Little, if indeed anything really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this elusive vintage record. This copy has been played a few times going by the spindle evidence on the labels, but overall, I would suggest carefully and on a quality stereo system, it could prove difficult to find significantly better as an original – and I have heard several others (first and second pressings and even Bronze versions) that do not even come close to this one and I left them well alone. Clearly the cover has issues with tape marks, but the record is nice and merits high recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
