Brief Info: Album number 10 for the everpopular Uriah Heep, the band the critics loved to hate. It was the first without founder-member and vocalist David Byron, who was replaced by John Lawton. Also a new bassist in Trevor Bolder, now sadly gone. A new line-up that won fans over – indeed I saw this band play at Ipswich within this year and very good they were too. This is a superb early copy with an ultra clean record, strong cover and unsplit inner sleeve. It is sure to delight most fans.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and actually looking better still. Only really marked down a little for a rub on the top left front edge. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England and including the card lyric inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Impressively clean, fresh and attractive. The top edge rub just encroaches into view as a very fine white strip but little else. Any fine surface marks are only really seen with angled viewing. The lack of creasing, grubbiness and sticker issues on a very matt surface are always most welcome bonuses. This front is nice.

Cover Back: A small tip crease bottom left with the odd small tip rub or two, but little detracts from a splendid barely worn back. No ring wear which again, is a considerable plus for a cover so clearly prone.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The odd tiny corner tip crease apart, this has little to fault. Superb drawing artwork of the band that are seen in my close-up pictures.

Top Edges: The top left front has around a three inch rub, both very straight and solid. As far as rubs go, this is neat.

Bottom Edges: Any of the very slight rubbing blends into the artwork, hence it shows little.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is tucked and folded with a real edge. This has just the odd small light rub when viewed end-on. The back opening is very clean, sharp with little wear, practically devoid of thickening or burring and this is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn, the very ends have rubbed a little and I think there are a couple of small tip-ins that I suspect when viewed up close under angled light – I will always mention this if I suspect. Crucially both fold hinges have barely any wear at all, always good news on such covers that are clearly more prone.

Corners: Light (right) to nearer moderate (left) tip rubs and the odd tiny tip crease. All retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this attractive 70’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors, but with the few blemishes, not for the very discerning.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): a hard card unlined lyric inner in superb condition. Clean, fresh with no ring wear or creasing – all edges intact as well with no repairs. The odd small edge rub and the top shaped and recessed opening immaculate. I have never seen one of these better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): or better. An impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very few and equally light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Probably worthy of the extra (+) really, I feel I am being overly critical on this splendid record. Visually it should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality Island-Bronze record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
