HISTORICAL INFORMATION: The LEAVES, a West Coast Band from Los Angeles, California USA, had a big hit record called "HEY JOE". Recorded and released in 1966 the single was on MIRA Records 222. Somewhat confusing is the fact that the record was released with several different flip sides but all were Mira number 222, and all had the same recorded version of "Hey Joe", produced by Norm Ratner. Writer credit was listed as Dino Valenti of Quicksilver Messenger Service, though Billy Roberts was the true writer. But that’s a whole other story.
THIS RECORD actually is a completely different version recording of the song. It was recorded in late 1965 and produced by Nick Venet, not Ratner. The elongated wordy title on this earlier recording was shortened on the later version. Also no writer credit is given here on the first version.
Tom recalls that there were at most a few hundred copies pressed of this record. A miniscule number for a record. The records were sent out to radio stations and for some reason Mira quickly pulled the copies and asked for them to be returned and/or not to be played. Tom believes that there were no commercial copies released to the public. When the group later recorded the 1966 version the personnel change to a different guitarist was evident on the new recording.
Most people have never heard the first version, myself included. I listened to it recently and I was amazed. The first version is better. When I told Tom that I prefer this early version he was in full agreement and pleased that I had come to the same conclusion he had made over 40 years ago. I recorded a portion of the record and include it here for you to hear for yourself.
BACKGROUND HISTORY: After The LEAVES disbanded Tom went into promotions, eventually hired by London Records. In fact, and of interest, he replaced the fellow who was the infamous subject of the Rolling Stones song "UNDER ASSISTANT WEST COAST PROMOTION MAN". He left London in 1973 and formed his own independent promotion company naming it TAR using his initials Tom Ambrose Ray. TAR became one of the most successful independent promotion companies in the west.
Tom has authorized me to auction some of his music treasures including Gold Record Awards, Promo Records and Test Pressings. There will be more LEAVES items also including his Original LEAVES Bass Drum Head so check my other listings.
NOTE: This record is extremely RARE and Valuable which is increased by the inclusion of the PROMO PACKAGE. You will likely never have another chance at something like this, so please don’t miss out on it. FREE SHIPPING!
