Description

Univers Zero: Ceux du Dehors LP UK pressing RIO

Recommended Records, RR 10, Vinyl, 33 rpm LP, Belgium 1981

Genre: New Music, Avant-garde, RIO

Disc Condition VG++, barely played.

Cover Condition VG+, sharp corners, the only significant flaw is a number of small nicks along the top half-inch of front and back cover (see scans).

Belgium's dark chamber rock ensemble Univers Zero made their recording debut in 1977 as a septet comprising bassoon, violin, viola, harmonium, bass guitar, electric guitar, and drums. On their third LP, Ceux du Dehors, Univers Zero integrates influences as diverse as the Magma, the Third Ear Band, Balkan folk music, Béla Bartók, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Albert Huybrechts, an obscure 20th century Belgian composer. Extramusical sources of inspiration include H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, and Hieronymus Bosch.

Sprinting tempos, jazz tonalities, and the addition of Andy Kirk on keyboards all contribute to the kinetic pace of Univers Zero’s third LP, Ceux Du Dehors (“The Outsiders,” 1981). Kirk makes his compositional debut with the 13-minute “Combat,” a tense, multifaceted work, which alternates martial rhythms with eerie lento passages and soaring jazz progressions. Ceux Du Dehors includes the eerie, atonal collective improvisation, “La Musique d’Erich Zann,” inspired by the H. P. Lovecraft tale of an ancient violinist whose crazed fiddling keeps a cosmic horror at bay.  This Recommended Records LP includes a beautiful sleeve with exquisite calligraphy which was not reproduced on the Cuneiform CD.

RECORD GRADING:

All records are conservatively graded; everything I currently have for auction comes from my personal collection has been handled carefully. I don't grade anything mint.

VG++  This is the highest grade I give.  Disc: a glossy record with no visible wear, no scratches or skips; an almost perfect record (some call NM). Record has been played only a few times on a quality turntable.  Sleeve: excellent condition, no cut-out marks or ring-wear.

VG+  Disc: Except for a few small things this record has been well cared for. Some light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect your enjoyment of the music. Some surface noise may be audible at the start of each side. No skips or visible scratches.  Sleeve: May have one or more of the following: faint ring wear, a light crease, light wear at the corners. Small imperfections, but still in nice shape.

VG  Disc: A record that shows some wear, some audible noise, light scratches, but no gouges.  Sleeve: has some considerable wear and may have one or more of the following, sometimes with visible record ring-wear, some wear at the corners, label marks from stickers that were pulled off, seam splits and creases.

VG-  Disc: surface noise is audible; may have some small pops and clicks from shallow scratches still no major gouges.  A suitable choice for a rarity that you can’t find elsewhere.  Sleeve: poor condition, seam splits and creases.
