Label/Format: CBS – Original intense orange with outer ridge, the inside areas being textured. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both look superb: ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with a very deep hued orange finish. Spindle marks are only just a fraction over light, these being mostly fine and faint as seen under light. For this popular album, this one appears only very lightly played and with utmost care. It offers supreme sound and will prove immensely difficult to find better.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A good solid average weight for this record.

Brief Info: An American pop band that were popular in the late 60s featuring the highly distinctive and powerful voice of Gary Puckett. This features their most famous song in ‘Young Girl’, a somewhat controversial song that reached No. 1 in the singles chart. The story of a man who has to resist the affections of an underage girl and illegal love – ‘With all the charms of a woman, You’ve kept the secret of your youth. You led me to believe, You’re old enough, To give me Love. And now it hurts to know the truth’… – even today this would be frowned upon if it were a new song with it’s more than risque content. It’s still a record that still receives regular airplay – still popular after all these years due to its catchiness, a pop classic without any doubt. The band had a relatively short-lived success, they disbanded in 1971. For collectors of 60s classics, this copy has simply defied it’s age – both record, cover and even the CBS inner are in fantastic conditions. The record looks superb and offers nigh-on pristine stereo sound. I have not seen this too many times, and only once to compare to this one – this is NOT a one-song wonder, it has no bad tracks and includes rousing versions of The Beatles ‘Lady Madonna’ and Dylan’s ‘Mighty Quin’.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate, this covers the closed edges and ends on the back via the spine. The back is matt and smooth, the red ‘stereo’ text is printed on the cover, it’s NOT a sticker. It was printed and made in England by Upton Printing Group.

Lamination & Front: Very impressive indeed, the laminate is very fresh, clear and retains a lovely shine, even under light, it has only light traces of friction rubs or dulling, lightly seen around the rim shape. Adhesion is total with no lifts or blisters and barely a crease to be seen. Barely aged and hugely attractive, it will never prove easy to find better.

Cover Back: The back is little short of stunning, predominately white and still just that, any traces of grubbiness are beyond minuscule. No creasing or rubbing or note, this rarer stereo cover back is absolutely exceptional.

Top & Bottom Edges: One microscopic chip on the top and a little mild laminate scuffing/chipping on the bottom that shows little. Both very straight and incredibly neat looking.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: Pristine Mint as new: solid, straight, uncompressed and square, my finger test reveals not one scuff, crack or blemish, this is the ultimate spine. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate and even this has amazing shine and whiteness (please see my text area close-up).

Corners: All in superb condition with no wear or rubbing, all retain the most beautiful neat pointed shape.

Cover Summary: If only all were kept like this, alas not to be as we all know. An incredible all-round example of this gorgeous 60’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better – this is mere whisker of Mint(-). This age-defying example should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and fewer indications of low usage of the record when seen like this – and this is guaranteed the one that came with the record. An unlined open windowed CBS promotional inner that has barely aged at all. Clean, fresh with both circles immaculate and no edge splits (or repairs). A light hint of crinkle on the back top right corner but little else.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and this being pretty harsh. The odd minor faint surface trace blemish if scrutinised but finding this gem better again will prove an immense task. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy played very little on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: ‘Young Girl, Get Out of My Mind, My Love For You is Way Out of Line…’, one of the most famous opening lines of any 1960s pop single and rarely will it be heard cleaner than this. If you have only heard this beautiful but somewhat risque single via a crackly old 45, well you truly have not heard it properly. This sounds absolutely magnificent in pristine rich stereo with all the strings and vocals crystal clear, focused, noise-free and sharp. But this classic single is not the only gem on this set, there is a stirring rendition of The Beatles’ ‘Lady Madonna’ and Dylan’s ‘Mighty Quinn’, made famous by Manfred Mann of course. Gary Puckett has an outstanding voice and on this album the man is inspired. An outstanding record for looks and sound, this record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is hugely impressive with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Beautifully produced and recorded, this has genuine hi-fi values and my system excelled. Any surface sounds barely even register and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies would have even made it to the 70s looking like this and into five decades on, this record still almost reminds of new. Very few will match or outperform this early original pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very modestly and then with utmost care, clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. I have to confess, the famous single was an absolute favourite when I was youngster, the catchiness of the song with it’s infectious melody gets embedded into the mind, at this time, I did not realise the implications of the song’s content – and I feel sure few at the time really noticed either. At this time, these issues were not publicised quite like they are today – whatever – this is a beautiful song and it’s success hugely justified. This copy is a treasure and will prove near impossible to find significantly better and can be unreservedly recommended to all.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
