Originally seeing release in 2006 and now celebrating its 20th anniversary with this expansive deluxe edition, Define The Great Line would serve as the fifth full-length from Floridian Christian post-hardcore outfit Underoath. Following the major line-up shift before 2004's preceding album - They're Only Seeking Safety, which would mark their first following the departure of original vocalist Dallas Taylor (who would go on to form Maylene & The Sons Of Disaster), their creative recourse and ultimate rebirth would be majorly elevated by the addition of current vocalist Spencer Chamberlain, while the clean vocal contributions from drummer Aaron Gillespie to offset Chamberlain's feral shrieks, would become the band's newfound formula. Inspired by their new line-up, the material across this record has long been praised as some of the most cinematic, cathartic and expansive of the Underoath canon, embracing more emo and post-hardcore melodicism while imbuing these elements into their signature metalcore aesthetic, while notably also pulling from the epic grandiosity of post-rock, landing in a unique sonic realm of melancholic post-metalcore, equally informed by the likes of At The Drive-In and Cult Of Luna. Certified Gold in the US, while peaking at number 2 on the Billboard 200, being the highest charting Christian album in almost a decade, the music video to 'Writing on the Walls' was also nominated for a 2007 Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video. While there will forever be two versions of Underoath in listener's minds, Define The Great Line is easily the career height of the Chamberlain era.
