Hello! My name is Neal Umphred. I am the author of the original line of Goldmine price guides for record collectors (way back in the 20th century). I have also been selling collectable records in the mail since 1980, when I advertised in Goldmine magazine as Pet Sounds Records. Because my name is known by long-time buyers, it is included in the main title of each of my eBay advertisements, so that people who have known me and my work for the past thirty-five years can find me via eBay’s search feature.
I currently have two blogs devoted to record collectors: Rather Rare Records (ratherrarerecords.com) deals with all forms of music, but especially sixties rock and soul (although I throw in some stuff on sixties comic books, too). Elvis - A Touch Of Gold (elvis-atouchofgold.com) deals exclusively with Presley Product, mostly the music he made and the records that featured that music (although I throw in some stuff on memorabilia, too).

ABOUT THIS RECORD

This copy of Nina Simone's I PUT A SPELL ON YOU (Philips PHM-200-173) is the very rare promotional mono pressing. There was only ever one mono pressing of this album done in 1965; all subsequent reissues on LP and CD have been in stereo. The mono mix is different than the stereo and many jazz aficionados believe the mono superior to the stereo. In addition, as this is a promo pressing, it was probably one of the first copies pressed from one of the first stampers, so it should have the best grooves and the best sound!

GRADING EXPLAINED

I use traditional grading based on the Goldmine standard grading (which I wrote).

Mint Minus (M-)
For jackets: Like new.
For records: Like new. Should play almost perfectly. I only use this for records that I know to have been played only a few time or that I believe not to have been played at all.

Near Mint (NM)
For jackets: Very clean front and back covers with square edges and almost no sign of wear.
For records: Very clean labels and very clean vinyl with little sign of handling. Should play almost perfectly.

Very Good Plus (VG+)
For jackets: Very clean front and back covers with reasonably square edges. Usual problem is used appearance with some wear, usually ring-wear on the front cover.
For records: Very clean labels and very clean vinyl with used appearance that shows obvious play and handling. No signs of abuse. Plays fine but probably with some background noise.

Very Good (VG)
For jackets: Clean front and back covers with reasonably square edges. Usual problem is well-used appearance with lots of wear, especially on the front cover.   
For records: Clean labels and clean vinyl with well-used appearance that shows considerable play and handling. Plays fine but with background noise.

 

PHOTOS EXPLAINED

Regarding the slight bulge on the left and right sides of the photo of the album jacket on this page: it’s a normal jacket with normal dimensions. The bulge was caused by how I photographed it.

Hey, I am not much of a photographer and I am taking the pictures on a Testrite Copy Stand. I didn’t understand that I had to set the camera for extreme close-ups which would not have caused the distortion that looks like a midriff bulge.
