"Out Of Control" aka "U-2 Three"
released c. 1979 by CBS Ireland # CBS 12-7951

very first U2 release recorded by U2 and Chas De Whalley
and remixed by Robbie McGrath at Windmill Lane Studio
only available in Ireland at the time of its release
comes in its original die-cut CBS Sleeve & the labels
say "MADE IN ENGLAND" & misspelling of Ireland ("Irelnad")

runout grooves (dead wax) on BOTH SIDES of the record
reading "BANG!. BONO. ADAM. THE EDGE. LARRY" and
also has the "Dancing Man" on Side A (later pressings
have the bandmember's names either on just one side
or not at all, and also have different label variations)

~ condition ~
record is in Excellent Condition with shiny clean vinyl
that has been fully play tested & it sounds fantastic and it
plays with no skips or repeats and hardly a trace of crackle
and just a few stray soft pops & the record has just light wear
and has shiny clean labels with almost no wear, other than
a pressing flaw to one side where the label is a little rippling
to it along the top & there is a little smiley face drawing
on the label on the other side
the sleeve is in Very Good + Condition and has
bright bold printing with no writing or markings other
than the word "stand" rubber-stamped inside of the sleeve
which has just a little wear around the edges & corners
and also has some light wrinkling & ringwear in places
but has no seam splits or major problems
displays well & plays nicely
~ matrix #'s ~
side one : CBS. U2.3. A-1 ("dancing man" drawing)
BONO. ADAM. THE EDGE. LARRY. BANG! (all separately
on different lines) CBS 7951-12-A (and then what
looks like a "T" and a "B" intertwined)
side two : CBS. U2.3 B-1 (and then all on one line)
BANG. BONO. ADAM. THE EDGE. LARRY (and then what
looks like a "T" and a "B" intertwined)
~ review ~
this single was U2's very first release and is one of
four that predate the band's 1980 debut album Boy and
was recorded by Chas De Whalley and U2 at Windmill Lane
before the band began working with Steve Lillywhite and
U2 Three is special because it is the earliest U2 collectible
that you can find by U2 that was only available in Ireland at
the time of its release& the versions of "Out Of Control" and
"Stories For Boys" are completely different from those that
appear on the Boy album and "Boy/Girl" never appeared
on any of U2's albums. In 1979, when U2 were a long way
from conquering the world, the Irish division of CBS Records
released a very small number of copies of U2 Three as an
extremely limited-edition 12" vinyl single. The first pressing
was a hand-numbered stickered edition of only 1000 copies
and sells now for $ thousands $ of dollars when you can
find one. The second pressing of this 12" is also incredibly
rare and often sells for $ hundreds $ of dollars because
of its scarcity. There are also 7" versions of this single which
we believe to last be in print as part of the 4 U2 Play aka
the U2 4 Pack set & it should be noted that all 12" versions
of this are far harder-to-find than the 7" versions
~ variations ~
here's what we know about the various pressing
variations of this storied release. all versions of this
we've seen look pretty much the same at first glance
but upon closer inspection there are variations
meaning a wide range of difference in value
~ First Issue ~
comes in a color "Sunburst" CBS Sleeve that has
a hand-numbered sticker at the upper-righthand
corner of the front of the sleeve (this was a numbered
limited edition of 1000 copies) & the record itself
has a bolder U-2 along the left side of the labels than
on later pressings, and the word "Ireland" is spelled
CORRECTLY in the credit line "Record mfd. in Ireland"
and the word "STEREO" is in all capitol letters on each
label and has "MADE IN ENGLAND" in all-caps at the
bottom of each label & also has each bandmember's
name/signature is etched into the runoff grooves
(aka dead wax) on BOTH SIDES of the record and
also has what is referred to as the "dancing man"
etched into the dead wax as well
~ second issue (what we're offering here) ~
same as above, but WITHOUT the hand-numbered
sticker & the record itself has a slightly thinner font for
U-2 along the left side of the labels & the word "Ireland"
is misspelled "Irelnad" in the credit line "Record mfd. in
Ireland" & the word Stereo is NOT in all caps & is printed
as "Stereo" and DOES have "MADE IN ENGLAND" in caps
at the bottom of each label (just like frist issues) & also
has each bandmember's name/signature is etched into
the runoff grooves (aka dead wax) on BOTH sides
and has the "dancing man" etched into the
dead wax as well on Side A
~ third issue ~
pretty much the same as 2nd issue
but only had the band's names in the
runoff of b-side of the vinyl
~ fourth issue ~
the 1981 fourth pressing re-release came in a
plain black sleeve without the numbered sticker and
U-2 is in the thinner style type of the 2nd/3rd versions
and Ireland is also mispelled on the labels & has the
band's names etched into the vinyl but only on the
b-side & it does not say made in england instead
having variations of CBS stuff in its place
