U2 were at their most overtly political on their 1983 War tour and this live radio broadcast album, recorded on 30 May in San Bernardino California is a potent record of that moment in time. They performed highlights of that third studio album - also titled War - including 'New Year's Day', which Bono said resonates with his feelings towards the Polish Solidarity Movement and dissident turned Nobel Prize winner Lech Walesa, a driving force in Poland's European integration. Meanwhile, on this version of 'Two Hearts Beat As One' there's a snippet of Chubby Checker's 'Let's Twist Again' giving a reprieve from the heavy themes, but the searching questions in the lyrics about conflict and the struggle to connect extend as easily to relationships as they do to military conflicts. It feels like the tour that Bono was out to state who he was and what he thinks about the world - and he hasn't really looked back since.
