This is an original, first-pressing 4 U2 Play set (known in some circles as Pac 1 to distinguish it from the two subsequent four-single Pacs). It was issued in the early ‘80s by the Irish CBS label and features a 4-pack of 7-inch singles, housed in a plastic case suitable for hanging on wall.

First copies of the set had a CBS red label with black printing, and were pressed on yellow, orange, white, brown and black vinyls. Packs went out with varying combinations of these colors. These packs with colored vinyl are more valuable than black vinyl sets. Two of the sleeves additionally bear the notation “Grafotone,” further indication of their original status. The singles are orange, yellow, black and yellow.

 This is one of the first sets; I obtained it directly from the import distributor when it was issued as at the time I worked in a record store. (Just as an FYI, later sets were all black vinyl with the CBS red label, while even later sets used the CBS orange & yellow label and then a different CBS red label with white CBS letters.)

The singles themselves are unplayed, although they have all lost their “sheen” over the years. The black vinyl one in fact looks quite dull almost to the point of having blemishes but, again, I have not played these. And I have kept the carefully stored. At one point I removed the singles from the plastic holder and placed them in individual plastic sleeves. See condition notes below.

Please bid seriously – if you are a U2 collector you probably have a good idea of what the colored vinyl versions of this set are worth.

Sleeve was originally assembled/glued slightly askew which meant that it developed some creasing on the lower portion while in the plastic holder (hence my removal of it from the holder). Some of the glue along the top seam and all of the glue on the lower seam has “died” (for lack of a better term), but the seams are not split in the sense of a tear. They could easily be reglued. One tiny pin-sized tear has occurred, however, along the top middle, above and to the right of the letter Y, but it is hardly noticeable. Single has individual paper sleeve too.

The plastic holder has been stored in its original shipping condition, i.e., folded four times, and has not seen any significant wear other than some indentation on the plastic from the two grommets at the top. (Some people kept their sets hanging from the grommets.)

The 2 photos of the entire 4-pack show everything laid flat – the singles are laying on top of the plastic holder, not inserted in its pockets.
