TOMITA - "CATASTROPHY 1999" – RARE JAP ONLY OST LP!!!

Here it is – the mythical “good” Tomita record! Not that I don’t enjoy his purist electronic realizations of Debussy, but the man gets into a serious groove thang here! He verges – dare I say – on the funky. . .

This is Tomita’s score to a mad, apocalyptic Japanese movie in which the world faces Armageddon. A-bombs detonate, giant slugs infest the subway – lurid pulpy portents of dooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom. Apparently the film is a right hoot (see Patrick Macias’ “Tokyoscope” book for a handy review). And Tomita comes up with a fittingly odd cosmic score, full of his trademark spacey synth BUT merged with a small group – prompting a moog + wah-wah + electric sitar + drums showdown! This sounds nothing like his other work – and here’s exactly what it sounds like. . .

Mad phasing, trilling theremin, chorus, wah-wah. . .what else is he gonna chuck into the mix ?!?!? Totally bonkers, yet bizarrely rhythmic sci-fi scoring is what it is. Prior sellers have called this “Morricone-ish” and let’s be honest – it isn’t at all. But it is a good record, and almost totally unknown in the west. The rest of the LP continues in a similarly dramatic vein, with several variations of the theme and some electric sitar noodlin’ along the way!

Very rare and of course a JAPANESE ONLY pressing! Would you believe it. . .

GRADING:

RECORD is NM, beautiful clean copy.

COVER is VG+; front fine – but a few scrapes and tears on the reverse. Seams look great though. OBI has been torn and taped at the back. Overall: not bad at all!
