  Three Dog Night , The Nude, The Clothed & The Hidden  
      DESCRIPTION Cover: All are VG+ Record: VG+++, Lot of three records and covers which celebrate the rare withdrawn cover for the Three Dog Nights album "It Ain't Easy" The reason for the "nude" cover was withdrawn is no real mystery. There was the usual conspiracy hatched by Rack Jobbers and Discount Store Owners to prevent the luridly colored, but not themed, original to be sold in their family oriented marketplace. And, since so much Three Dog product was dispensed through these locations a quickly produced and more chaste cover was put in the racks without further resistance. There was likely a recall of the offending cover from all other outlets as well. Obviously, a few slipped through the net and I pulled one on board.
The members of Three Dog Night would never have been considered part of the counter culture but they were following the trends and had an idea of what might excite their fans. It was cool and often profitable to do something that upset the establishment back then. It was almost a measure of your commitment to certain ideas that ,you as a pop star, had to be hassled, censured, and even jailed in the service of self expression.
I imagine that the guys in the band showed the proper shock and surprise when approached with the news conveyed, no doubt, by a carefully selected team of band management and Record Co management. "Look, fellas, it's not like they want to ban the music... this is something that you need to do for the fans!!" Even their Heavier Brethren, the real counter-culturatii, must have reassessed the merits of the band! By the way "Momma Told Me Not To Come" was great and a hit!
The replacement cover is perhaps a little too constrained and perhaps satirically has a version of the Last Supper on the wall; I'm sure that they were told that there was some required penance for the misdeed. They could have, after all, just airbrushed a few swim suits into the existing cover picture!
OK, the record goes on to sell gazillions of copies, they get a hit single or two out the package. Time passes, hurt feelings are soothed the sharpness of the memory fades. But do those feelings ever truly dissipate? Maybe not.
The next album ,"Naturally", comes out with a rather nondescript cover of the band on a platform with their gear; a view of a cloudy sky beyond. Nothing for the manager of F.W. Woolworths to get excited about. More Hits, More Hits, Somebody decides it's time for a Greatest Hits package from the band.
Someone, or some persons, hadn't forgotten the dust up over the "It Ain't Easy" cover. Now, if you do a google image search for "Golden Bisquits" which is the title of the greatest hits album you will find several variations. The most frequently seen version is the US version with its supremely ugly Dali with a lobotomy painting cover, the other version is typical of the German and UK releases which have the original cover for "It Ain't Easy" . And , no added swimsuits.
"Meanwhile, Back In The States" a young girl is in the record section of the local S.S. Kresges; in one hand she holds a brand new copy of "Golden Bisquits" in the other the earnings from a Babysitting gig. She carries the record home; perhaps singing the songs to herself happily because she knows almost all of them. Later, after she has removed the protective shrink wrap she opens the gatefold cover and sees Three Dog Night naked!!! Some subversive ,or cabal of them, had conspired to stick the forbidden image of the band INSIDE the cover so the small minded hypocrites that run our nation's Five & Dimes couldn't kick up a fuss once again. Of course, the record company only took their revenge so far, business being business. The cropped "It Ain't Easy" cover is printed on the backside of a tear off poster. It wouldn't occur to anyone to put the wrong side of the poster out. Brilliant!!
Epilogue: I mentioned that the version of the nude cover that made it into the "Golden Bisquits' package was cropped. What was cropped away was the image of a young woman , fully clothed, positioned high in the upper left hand corner of the original. I was not able to discover her identity. I suspect that she was one of the GTOs who had graced the inner gatefold art of one other Three Dog Night album, but couldn't confirm this. A photo of the GTOs is inside the "Golden Bisquits" gatefold but that doesn't prove anything. Oh Yeah! What the hell, is a Bisquit? I mean, they didn't quit they just became irrelevant.
