Description

I think one great line of vinyl collecting is when initial issues of LP covers are changed due to complaints from record company executives, from censors, from the buying public or simply due to errors in judgment.

Remember the Beatles “Butcher Cover” and the Mamas & the Papas “Toilet” Cover? Or how about the Dave Clark Five “No-Instruments” Cover or Blind Faith’s “Topless Girl” Cover? And don’t forget Three Dog Night’s “Nude” Cover and Roxy Music’s “Underwear Ladies” cover. Replacement covers were issued for all of these original covers.

There are 2 LPs in this auction:

LP #1:

  • HARD LABOR” LP by Three Dog Night

  • This is ABC Dunhill Records DSD 50168.

  • This LP was released in 1974.

  • Original copies of this LP became known as Three Dog Night’s “Birthing Cover”.

  • It has a GATE-FOLD COVER.

  • This cover was considered to be objectionable or in “bad taste”, because the front cover pictures a bird-like creature in stirrups on a medical examining table giving birth to a vinyl record. It was re-released with a revised cover that had a big band-aid over the “birthing” image.

  • The band Three Dog Night has the distinction of having not one but two of their original LP covers banned or withdrawn. The first was the original cover of their “It Ain’t Easy” LP (known as “The Nude Cover” but they, in fact, were not nude, just wearing orange body suits).

  • The ORIGINAL “BIRTHING COVER” is in VERY STRONG VG to WEAK VG+ CONDITION with very light overall wear. There is a tiny drill hole near the lower right corner. The front cover image is NICE and CLEAN with just a tiny hint of wear at the top center. There is a tiny scuff at the lower area of the rear cover. The corners have light wear. There is NO ring wear, NO writing, NO creases and NO seam splits.

  • This LP was issued with a manila file folder (with a “birth record sheet” inside) with the LP title on the tab.

  • The MANILA FILE FOLDER IS STILL FULLY ATTACHED to the cover with NO breaks in the perforation-attached edge. (Most often the file folder becomes detached and/or goes missing from the cover altogether, but NOT THIS ONE!)

  • The VINYL for the “Birthing Cover” is in NEAR MINT CONDITION.

But in this auction, in addition to the Birthing Cover”, the high bidder ALSO receives the replacement “Band-Aid Cover”!

LP #2:

  • HARD LABOR” LP by Three Dog Night

  • This is ABC Dunhill Records DSD 50168.

  • This LP was released in 1974.

  • It has a GATE-FOLD COVER.

  • This LP is the REPLACEMENT COVER that has a LARGE BAND-AID positioned to cover the complete scene of the creature in stirrups on the medical examining table giving birth to a vinyl record.

  • This “Band-Aid Cover” is in VERY STRONG VG to VG+ CONDITION with light overall wear (more on the rear slick than the front slick). The corners are without wear. This Gate-Fold Replacement Cover has the same images inside as the first (“Birthing”) cover. There are NO tears, NO ring wear, NO writing, NO creases and NO seam splits.

  • It was also issued with a manila file folder (with a “birth record sheet” inside) with the LP title on the tab attached to the cover by perforated edge of the folder.

  • The MANILA FILE FOLDER IS STILL PARTIALLY ATTACHED to the cover. Of the 8 ½ inches of perforation on the edge of the file folder 4 inches of perforation is still in tact. (Often the file folder is separated from the LP cover and missing from this LP altogether, but this one is still partially attached.)

  • The VINYL for this replacement cover is in NEAR MINT CONDITION. (The labels shown are the same on both LPs)

THIS IS A GREAT “ORIGINAL & REPLACEMENT SET” of the Three Dog Night “Hard Labor” LP! So, win this auction and you win 2 LPs and their covers! These 2 LPs go hand-in-hand and would look great framed in someone’s “vinyl room”.

FYI: I use Goldmine Grading Standards (P for Poor, F for Fair, G for Good, VG for Very Good, VG+
