Mega rare original bound set of 78s, the earliest issue of these tracks, some of the first recordings to feature the Theremin early electronic instrument. These proto-space-age-pop songs with the "exotic" addition of the Theremin were composed by Harry Revel and conducted by Les Baxter (this is one of his earliest appearances on record), with the Theremin played by Dr. Samuel Hoffman. This album was sponsored by the Corday perfume company, and each of Revel's songs is an attempt to sonically portray one of their fragrances. In the notes, Revel writes that only the Theremin can "convey the actual ethereal quality of rare perfume." A classic Theremin artifact!
This landmark of electronic pop should be heard by anyone interested in exotica, space age pop, and early electronic instruments and musicians like Oskar Sala and his trautonium, Edgard Varese, Tom Dissevelt, Bernard Herrmann, John Eaton and the Syn-Ket, Robert Moog, Donald Buchla, Morton Subotnick, Clara Rockmore, Miklos Rosza, the Ondioline, Raymond Scott, Bruce Haack, the ARP synthesizer, Jean-Jacques Perrey, Gershon Kingsley, Jean-Michel Jarre, Paul Beaver, Bernie Krause, Hugh Le Caine, Ferrante and Teicher, Dick Hyman, Martin Denny, Stereolab, ondes Martenot, Lothar and the hand people, etc. Check out my other items for more early electronic/synth/concrete/electroacoustic, avant garde/experimental/noise, free jazz/improv, sound art, field recordings/sound effects, audiophile, and 20th century classical vinyl.
