Blue Station Jazz: Reference Audit Report

Thelonious Monk – Thelonious Himself (Riverside RLP 12-235) Authentic 1957 Mono Original – Deep Groove All Blue Label

At Blue Station Jazz, we provide "Reference Grade" vinyl audits on a J. Sikora Standard Max turntable with a DS Audio optical cartridge. This copy is a definitive 1957 Riverside original, featuring the essential Deep Groove pressing rings, the All Blue label with silver print, and the correct original patent numbers. Furthermore, this specific pressing has been carefully treated with LAST Record Preserve to ensure long-term groove integrity and minimize stylus wear.

Surface Quietness / Playback Background: [VG+] Our audit confirms a solid VG+ listening experience. The listener will encounter some random, low-level clicks and pops throughout the session, which are typical for an original 1957 Riverside pressing. Importantly, this minor surface noise does not intrude upon the music, nor does it compress the full-range dynamics.

Sonic Fidelity / Mastering Presence: [B+] The fidelity on this lacquer is highly rewarding. The mono soundstage focus is excellent, capturing Monk's piano with a natural tone and tremendous dynamic life. The absolute highlight of the pressing occurs on the final track, "Monk's Mood," where John Coltrane's tenor horn enters the session with fantastic, commanding presence. Hearing Monk and Coltrane interact with this level of clarity is a true audiophile treat.

Technical Markers (Deadwax & Label):

  • Label: All Blue Riverside label with Deep Groove. Includes original patent numbers.

  • Treatment: Grooves have been conditioned with LAST Record Preserve.

Jacket Condition: Graded VG. Please note ring wear on the front cover, heavy wear on the top left and bottom left corners (back), and a moisture stain on the back cover.

The Station Audit Process:

  • Ultra-Sonic Deep Cleaned: Processed through our 6-minute deep-cleaning cycle.

  • Archival Upgrades: Shipped in a new anti-static rice paper inner sleeve; jacket housed in a 3mil crystal-clear outer sleeve.

Summary: A verified 1957 Deep Groove original, play-graded and professionally preserved. A rare opportunity to own a foundational piece of Monk's discography that delivers fantastic, full-dynamic sound.
