Description

Unable to recall where or when I purchased this album, which was made and sold under rights by Fontana Records.
The disc plays perfectly without jumps and fewer than a handful of faint clicks throughout.
The run offs are stamped 12 = 305 1L 1 670  and  12 = 305 2L 1 670 respectively. On both sides the number 12 has been redacted and preceded with 6RLP (engraved).
The part laminated outer sleeve is sound, without splits or creases. Very small amount of rubbing at each corner and 35mm x 2mm of the surface layer has lifted along the upper edge next to the slot. A few small stains on the back.
Titles:   Jackie-ing  (6.01),  Straight no chaser (9.16),  Played twice (7.55),  I mean you  (9.43),  Ask me now  (10.43).
Personnel:  Thelonious Monk  piano,  Thad Jones  cornet,  Charlie Rouse  tenor, Sam Jones  bass,  Art Taylor  drums. Recorded New York,  1, 2, & 4 June 1959.
This was Monk`s first time in a recording studio as leader, for two years. Things did not go smoothly. After several false starts and four complete takes of Played Twice, Monk finally declared himself satisfied. Next day, everything went smoothly and three more tracks were recorded. However, Orrin Keepnews wanted one more track. The band returned to the studio on the 4th, but Monk had forgotten to bring his music, a new composition named after his niece, Jackie. Monk believed he could teach the musicians by ear. Not so. After a near rebellion, Monk was dispatched to collect his music. An hour later , Monk returned with what, on paper, appeared to be a simple 16 bar theme. The band struggled through two full takes before finally producing a perfect master take.
