The World Ends: Afro Rock & Psychedelia in 1970s Nigeria
The latest collection from the London-based label dedicated to unearthing fabulous retro sounds from West Africa continues with a triple LP collection that unveils some of the tastiest cuts of psychedelic rock since the original wave of mind-bending music from the summer of love.
The World Ends compiles 33 songs from the early '70s which capture the frenetic energy of post-civil war Nigeria. The material spans a variety of sounds and musical hybrids — folk-rock, funk, soul, psychedelic rock and space-blues — all cascaded with a healthy doze of west African rhythms and indigenous instruments.
It's difficult to fully describe the breadth of the material. But the Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd drone of The Identicals' "Akwa Kayi Ji Bia Nuwa" is solid. P.R.O's "Blacky Joe "is a fuzzed-out blues-tinged political ode that has a Hendrix-meets-Country Joe feel. Cicada's "Oli Nkwu" is highlighted by a very psychedelic guitar solo that fades in and out of the mix. And The Elcados' "Chokai & Oreje" displays some pure funkified jams.
The World Ends is skewed toward featuring male-dominated acts, the exception is The Lijadu Sisters' "Life's Gone Down Low," a slow droning burner featuring some memorable vocal harmonies from the band's titular members.
While it's a great title for the compilation, reflecting the doom that was felt by the youth of Nigeria through that country's raging three-year civil of the late '60s, it's equally a tribute to The Black Mirrors, whose song offers the compilation it's title. "The World Ends" is a perfect slice of '70s groove-driven pop, featuring a superb vocal melody backed by some eerie organ licks and a tight rhythm section. It's the epitome of the hidden gems this collection provides.
Overall, this is an incredible retro comp, unearthing some of the finest music from the early '70s, much of which is far superior to the better-known material from those Western bands to whom the "psychedelic" label is attached.Label: SOUNDWAY 023a
