THE WHO's most Psychedelic album!
.
*Listen to tracks from this LP in the SOUND PLAYER below
.
a truly classic Who Album, rare to find as it didn't sell nearly as well as their 1968 release, Tommy. Definitely one of the most underrated albums of the psychedelic era, and stands up tall alongside the band's more popular releases.
.
Besides all the (wonderful) radio jingles pastiche that tie the songs together, we have perhaps the best songcraft and guitar work in Townshend's career. That is what this album is really all about -and it is hugely psychedelic in many parts.
.
Armenia, City In The Sky, which leads off the album is a perfect case-in-point, with it's phase-shifted, heavy fuzz and backwards guitar and swirling backgrounds. Utterly astonishing -and a huge leap forward from the (also wonderful) previous album "A Quick One" / "Happy Jack" ...depending on what country you live in. Total Acid rock. Our Love Was, Rael and the thunderous Relax all carry this very psychedelic, yet utterly Townshend feel that, btw, also inhabited songs that were left off of what Pete had originally planned as a double LP. Of course we all know how psychedelic and powerful I Can See For Miles is...
.
I Can't Reach You finds Townshend beginning to stretch himself into philosophical-spiritual territory; the utterly gorgeous Tattoo and the breathtaking acoustic Sunrise show introspective, vulnerable sides to the singer/songwriter that had never-before been exposed ...and "Rael" was another mini-opera, with musical motifs that reappeared in Tommy.
.
The album is as perfect a balance between melodic mod pop and powerful, psychedelic instrumentation as the Who (or any other group) would achieve; psychedelic pop was never as jubilant, not to mention, funny (the fake commercials and jingles interspersed between the songs are a total gas) -and note that Daltrey's singing here is at it's absolute zenith.
.
ESSENTIAL, indespensable, prime late '60s WHO
a terrific set of songs that ultimately stands as one of the group's greatest achievements.
