The Velvet Underground & Nico is the debut album by American rock band The Velvet Underground and vocal collaborator Nico. It was originally released in March 1967 by Verve Records. Recorded in 1966 during Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia event tour, The Velvet Underground & Nico would gain notoriety for its experimentalist performance sensibilities, as well as the focus on controversial subject matter expressed in many of its songs including drug abuse, prostitution, sadism and masochism and sexual deviancy.
Though a commercial and critical failure upon release, the record has since become one of the most influential and critically acclaimed rock albums in history, appearing at number thirteen on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time as well as being added to the 2006 National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.
Up for sale is that debut album from 1967: The Velvet Underground & Nico. This is the V-5008 mono original version. Do not miss the once in a lifetime chance to own this piece of history, especially in this condition.
The cover is in near mint condition. The banana is fully intact with very minor picking marks at the top of the stem. The spine is excellent to near mint, with very minor bending at the corners, which you will be able to see in the hi-res pictures. The inner record sleeve is in very good to excellent condition, missing a little bit of paper on a corner. The record is in excellent to near mint condition, with tiny scratches only visible under bright sunlight. This record has been played through from beginning to end and it plays flawlessly with little to no crackling.
What also makes this record special is it features the actor Eric Emerson projected upside down behind the band playing a live show, part of their Exploding Plastic Inevitable tour. Emerson threatened to sue since the use of his image was unauthorized. MGM decided to recall all issued copies and halted its distribution while the image was doctored, and Emerson’s likeness removed from the photo. Copies already printed were sold with a large black sticker covering his image. For the CD reissue of the album in ’96, the image was restored. This album made it past the black sticker period and never had Emerson covered up.
