Hello, I am auctioning an original pressing of this legendary recording from the Velvet Underground & Nico. While this record is hardly in need of introduction, what might need some introducing is the big black sticker on the back of this particular copy.
The so-called "lawsuit sticker" is named after what resulted from actor Eric Emerson's threats to sue after discovering his work featured on the album's back cover. An unauthorized "torso" picture of his was projected over the band during an Exploding Plastic Inevitable event. While the effects of this lawsuit are seen on all subsequent releases (details of his photography airbrushed over), the copies that still remained in inventory met a different fate. These big stickers were printed in order to nullify the complaint rather than pay royalties to Mr. Emerson. I guess one sticker just wasn't enough for this album...
As you might guess, the number of records to have received this treatment were extremely limited, and so I bought this with the mind of a collector and not the ears of an audiophile (to be fair, this recording is not celebrated for its hi-fi characteristics in the first place). I did spin it one time, and although it skipped once or twice, I did not have to fiddle with my needle to get it back on track. I imagine this could be remedied by a weight adjustment to your turntable's arm, but really the appeal of this record is its status as an artifact which contributes to our understanding of rock history through the stories and myths it evokes. Also, it even counts as an original Andy Warhol art piece, so this could be a great purchase for the budding art collector! I believe the pictures tell most of the story of its physical condition, but I will be happy to clarify any aspect of its condition that might interest you.
You can see both on the record's sleeve and label display a catalog number of V6-5008, so look that up on discogs for the specifics of this issuing. Interestingly, this version is not typically described as having the lawsuit sticker like the mono "west coast" pressing. Perhaps this implies it's even more unusual? I would like to add that I don't often see these classy Verve insert sleeves present in many auctions for this record. Something to keep in mind if you're on the lookout to add something like this to your collection.
All of the components of this record are separated appropriately to protect it during transit and I will have it shipped in a carefully reinforced package.
These are typically listed on the internet with prices upwards of $400 dollars (a very nice copy recently sold for ~$500), so now is your chance to get one that more closely resembles the true market value. Starting the bid at 0.99.
