The Velvet Underground & Nico - VERVE V5008 MONO TORSO COVER EAST COAST 1ST PRESS W/INNER TOTALLY DIFFERENT MIX THAN STEREO
This first version has an image of actor Eric Emerson projected upside-down on the wall behind the band. On the second version, the actor's image is covered by a large black sticker. On the third version, the actor's image is airbrushed out.
Gatefold cover with banana sticker.( peeled) First pressing with Emerson torso image upside down on the back cover.
East Coast pressing with labels giving "Side 1" and "Side 2" instead of "Side A" and "Side B", 1.25" pressing ring diameter instead deep groove 2.75" pressing ring diameter, credit Reed-Cale-Morrison-Tucker instead L.Reed-J. Cale-S. Morrison-M. Tucker.
The actor Eric Emerson, protagonist of some multimedia films projected behind the group during the EPI, filed a lawsuit against the record label for the non-payment of the rights regarding his image that can be seen upside down on the back cover on this version. So between March and April 1967 the album was suddenly withdrawn from trade and shops.
Block-shaped 'S' engraved in the deadwax and the label fonts indicate a pressing by MGM Record Manufacturing Division, Bloomfield, New Jersey.

THE VALUABLE HEAVY WEIGHT GATEFOLD JACKET IS IN VG PLUS CONDITION THE FRONT COVER HAS BEEN OPENED UP AND I HAVE NOT FIXED IT, (IT IS AN EASY FIX WITH INVISIBLE TAPE) OTHERWISE THE COVER HAS ONLY A FIXED 1" TOP SPLIT - NO WRITING ON FRONT , HAS NAMES OF THE BAND WRITTEN ON BACK- HAS NO LABELS - HAS RINGWEAR - LIGHT BUMPING TO EDGES AND CORNERS - NORMAL AGE WEAR - NOTE THE BANANA HAS BEEN PEELED
THE SPINE IS VG++ FULLY READABLE WITH SOME VERY LIGHT STORAGE BUMPING (SEE PHOTO) THE LABEL SIDE 1 IS IN VG+ CONDITION AND SHOWS NORMAL SPINDLE MARKS - SIDE 2 IS VG WITH WHAT APPEARS TO BE 3 PAINT DROPS AND NORMAL SPINDLE MARKS COMES WITH ORIGINAL VERVE INNER SLEEVE

Some incredible songs on this 1967 album from composer Reid King who married the Brazilian sound with
popular music of that era to produce an album that should have really taken off then, but due to the strange
setup of Canterbury Records who were in business to lose money for a Mattel tax shelter, the album was allowed
to die on the vine by Canterbury when it started to take off with airplay and sales. Reid King went on to become
one of the foremost composers of contemporary music for the gut-string guitar.
FINALLY ONE LAST WORD RE HAIRLINES, IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND ANY NON SEALED RECORD WITHOUT THEM, MANY HAD THEM FROM NEW. MOSTLY THEY ARE A RESULT OF STORAGE AND USE AND USUALLY HAVE LITTLE IMPACT ON THE SOUND QUALITY. THE SAME GOES FOR BACKGROUND NOISE, UNFORTUNATELY ALL RECORDS WILL HAVE SOME AND THIS VARIES AND REFLECTS THE PRESSING QUALITY.
Most records have production marks where someone touched or moved the vinyl while it was still semi-soft. These marks look like smudges, but are not scratches or "paper scuffs" and do not usually sound. Untouched vinyl from newly-opened records have these marks.

How I Grade Condition Of Discs
Mint
This means I have owned it from new or purchased from a distributors warehouse, basically it means absolutely new shape, never been played or out of its dust cover. In the case of LP's, a North American album will have to be factory sealed (anyone can reseal an album!) Take Note: European and Japaneses albums were never shrink wrapped!
Note: Being mint does not guarantee it's free of pops and clicks, many pressings especially from the US were made with very poor vinyl and in a hurry which means often there are imperfections in the pressing. As a former importer, we were often given back brand new albums due to clicks heard in the playback.
Near Mint - Looks rarely played, very shiny with no visible marks
Excellent to Excellent Plus - A disc is super clean, with only very light visible marks that do not hamper play
Excellent minus is a disc that is excellent except it may have some markings that do not show up in the playing
VG - A disc that is STILL in good shape, WILL have some scuffs or scratches, not in excellent shape but well worth owning. VG + and ++,a disc that is that much better than VG.
