The Sun Ra Quartet – Media Dreams LP 1978 Hand Drawn Cover Very Rare Space Jazz
Some of the most incredible synth playing ever ..... Ra
Live in Italy, January 9th 1978.
Media Dream is a live recording of the Sun Ra Quartet, from January of 1978 in Italy (all the quartet recordings were done that month). It's a mostly free date, with "Constellation" and "Media Dreams" being the only tunes that seem to have been pre-composed (they are also the longest tracks on the album). The album starts with a keyboard showcase, with Ra supplying some super low tones along with some very queasy sounding organ. Then it's on to "Constellation" which has a great, really cheesy rhythm, courtesy of the Crumar Synthesizer/rhythm box, and excellent soloing from everyone, especially Gilmore. "Media Dreams" starts out really pretty, then gets progressively freakier. The rest of the tracks are basically soloing showcases for all the players.
I love the spontaneity of this record. Sun Ra has found this great new organ toy and plays around with it, figures out what can be done and his fun is infectious - first it gets his band mates to join in, then it grabs the listener.
This may not be groundbreaking but definitely it is very entertaining and brings a bright smile to the listener's face. What is there more to ask.
Media dreams his best work as a whole in my ears...didn't check his full catalogue so far though(not possible within one earth life) ... But media dreams has kind of a magic where I always going back to... It's a pure analyzing listening experience... it's about Ras Ark UFO that he built with his arkestra to fly away through created frequencies from this boring planet where actually only animals and nature should be..Ra who had no Hate inside still takes slavery as his muse but in a different way than all others...just imagine without slavery there would have been no blues without blues no jazz without jazz no funk without funk no hip hop so all African American musicians took and still take racism as muse for their art..but Ra used it different... Let's analyze how.. Just listen to media dreams a true 'Ra'rity within the Saturn catalogue and find the answers
