Description
The RAG RECORD. 1965. In 1965, with bands like Them, The Interns, the Madlads and more- on the boards in Belfast, Rhythm & Blues was big! The Spectres were all students at Stranmillis College, Belfast. Teddie Palmer wrote words of 'The Facts of Life' and guitarist John 'Dinger' Bell put the music to them. Peter Lloyd was a student at Queen's University, he had opened a small studio in Cromac Street, where Them (Van Morrison) made their first recordings, such as Don't Start Cryin' Now & Gloria.
All very basic, the band stood in one room , the singer stood in the next room listening to the band through a small speaker as he sang, and the whole thing was recorded live in one take on a 2 track Revox tape recorder. The record was sold as The Rag Record for Student Rag Day charities, and has now become a cult collectors item, described as 'an early example of the Belfast Sound' selling for around £300!
