~~ it's said to be difficult, dark, occasionally nondescript, and weird, and even the band's keyboardist acknowledged this in the liner notes, even venturing to day that some of the songs were among their worst although a few were some of their best. Really it's quite unique and sounds different from most post-punk era albums, shimmering in some spots (like "Monument" and "Where the Love is", the latter should have been a hit!), and is quite possibly the best album The Comsat Angels (who The Sound toured with the year before) never made! The ceremonial procession commences with the nearly apocalyptic and very sparse "All Fall Down" before turning into "Party of the Mind", a lyrical downer but a bit jolty musically, particularly toward the end with Adrian Borland's careening guitar and the "laughter" from the party. "Monument" has a rather outdated drum machine (a bit purposeless...Dudley's a decent drummer, but I guess they were trying to be a bit experimental in trying to piss off WEA, which they did very successfully but it's amazing that this record was ever released at all) but is probably the lightest song in the whole affair. If you've heard The Comsat Angels' Fiction, you might have an idea what "In Suspense" sounds like (sparse guitar and piano work, minimal bass/drumming). "Where the Love is" is one of the highlights...the lyrics are very simple and the music's in a minor key but goodness what a tune! "Song and Dance" commences the old Side B and sounds like a fusion of the previous two tracks with lyrics mocking the optimistic nature of pop songs, whereas "Calling the New Tune" sounds reminiscent of a twisted take on The Buggles or Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. "Red Paint" is probably the punkiest affair on the album (nearly harkening back to Jeopardy...and has the word "debacle" purposefully mispronounced to fit the meter and rhyme!), "Glass and Smoke" is the longest, most passively energetic, and moodiest of the songs from the original LP (for comparison's sake, it's what Echo and the Bunnymen's "Over the Wall" or The Comsat Angels' "Dark Parade" would have sounded like had The Sound recorded it), and "We Could Go Far" is a very sparse, minimal, and simplistic.
