The Smiths - 'Shoplifters of the World Unite' US-Only Promo 12" + Press Kit - 1987

This unusual one-track promotional 12" of 'Shoplifters Of The World Unite' was released only in the USA in 1987 to promote the 'Louder Than Bombs' LP, with which it shares its orange-tinted shade of sleeve artwork. What makes this item so collectable is the unique picture sleeve, which is one of the few official Smiths releases to feature members of the band on the cover; this artwork not appearing on any other release. Just like the rare Sire promotional release of 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' which had a modification of 'The Queen Is Dead' cover, this release has the strange distinction of being completely white on the reverse of the sleeve. An added bonus here is the promotional press kit which only occasionally accompanied this 12", and which comes in its original 'typewriter' Warner Bros folder. The press kit is comprised of a 2-page typed biography on yellow 'Sire logo' paper, and a terrific 2-photo sheet which has Morrissey in front of a tour poster (which was also famously used on the rare Australian releases of 'Ask') and a second photo which has the band in front of the Salford Lads' Club with snow on the ground (a photo from the same session as the one used for the orange sleeve artwork). Both photo and Sire biography are clearly recognisable as original items and have been preserved in immaculate condition, as have the record and sleeve (see below).This promotional 12" was listed (without the press kit) in the Record Collector Smiths Top 100 rarities list at Number 54 whereupon it was valued at 45.00 (see photo). It is an item which is rarely seen for sale, which I believe is an indication of its desirability amongst collectors, and it is truly a pleasure to own.
This is a highly-collectable example of this record; the vinyl and labels are in near-mint condition, with only a few extremely light surface marks. The sleeve is also in near-mint condition, with only one or two of the faintest of creases beginning and some light bumps to the corners. The spine and edges are sharp and unworn, with just the very beginning of a surface split in the spine middle. There are also no marks on the plain white reverse of the sleeve, as can be seen. The press kit has also been extremely well looked-after and the biography and photo sheet are in mint condition. It would be hard to imagine an example of this item, particularly the press kit, being found in better condition. Please see the accompanying photos; note that the ID lettering is just on the pictures and not the item itself.
