This issue of 'Shoplifters Of The World Unite' is unusual in that it is one of the few promotional 12"s released in the US to come with a picture sleeve. The sleeve is even more unusual in that it features an image of the band, which is particularly rare for officially-released Smiths material. The image which was used was taken outside the 'Salford Lads Club', but at a different time to the session used for the inside artwork of 'The Queen Is Dead' since there is snow on the ground in the photograph used here! The artwork is particularly collectable as it does not appear on any other release, and comes in a glorious shade of orange to match the 'Louder Than Bombs' artwork which it was intended to promote. Just like the equally rare Sire promotional release for 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out', which had a modification of the green 'The Queen Is Dead' cover, this sleeve has the strange distinction of being completely white on the reverse. This promotional 12" was listed in Record Collector's Smiths Top 100 rarities in 2005 at Number 54, though it is far more interesting and appears to be genuinely rarer than many of the items listed above it. It is a record which is not often seen for sale, which is an indication of its true value amongst collectors, and it is certainly a pleasure to own.The vinyl and labels are in strong excellent condition, and the vinyl, which retains its highly glossy appearance, has only a few light marks which are away from the playing surface. From the unmarked appearance of the labels, the record appears almost certainly unplayed. The rare sleeve is also in strong excellent condition, with just some very light corner wear in places being the only sign of imperfection to this very well-preserved sleeve. There are no creases, no writing, no 'cut-outs' and no damage anywhere. The edges are strong and sharp and without seam splitting. A terrific example of this very rare item.
