The Smiths - 'Meat Is Murder' USA Promo LP

This record is extremely unusual and rare. It is an official release (as a Warner Bros. 'Music Show') for the US market, and was intended to promote the Meat Is Murder album. It features musical excerpts from each of the tracks with a commentary by Morrissey in which he is being interviewed about the band. The themes which he covers are closely related to each of the tracks concerned, and he talks in depth and eloquently about many aspects of The Smiths and his own songwriting and lyrical style. For the Smiths enthusiast this is absolutely fascinating as he talks about his views that the band should not be considered "alternative", that his old headmaster appeared on the radio, in response to The Headmaster Ritual on the album, and commented that Morrissey had been "such a nice boy" at school! Morrissey goes on to explain that he "went off" games at school due to it being compulsory but had actually been a "prized athlete" prior to this. Relating to Rusholme Ruffians he suggests very wittily that he was "educated on the fairground" and that the annual visits of the fair were the "reason people were alive" on a council estate. He also talks about his views on sex and romance, the Royal family, and the meaning behind the track Shakespeare's Sister (which was not included on the album but which is included here nonetheless). Bizarrely, there is a similar promotional interview and music by The Blasters (an American Rockabilly/Blues band) on the reverse side which makes for a strange contrast.It is understood that this promotional version of the 'Meat Is Murder' LP was produced in such limited numbers that Record Collector magazine ranked it as high as Number 5 in their all-time list of Smiths 'Top 100 Collectables'. This places the record higher than the French 7" release of 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' for instance! At the time it was deemed to have a market value of 60.00 (see photo), though prices of all Smiths collectable items have continued to rise over the years.
The vinyl is in excellent condition, as are the labels, with only very light surface marks being present; the vinyl retains its glossy sheen. The LP comes, as issued, in a plain white 'die-cut' sleeve. This is a well-preserved copy of this very interesting and highly-rare item.
