Minor/mild surface noise in a few spots, and a doodle on the label as shown.
It was producer Norrie Paramor who recommended that the Shadows follow their 1960 chart-topper with "Man of Mystery," the theme to a series of British movies based around the stories of author Edgar Wallace. Composed by Michael Carr (who also wrote "Hang out Your Washing on the Siegfried Line" and a later Shadows hit "Kon Tiki"). It was described by the Shadows' own Bruce Welch as "a chilling and sinister composition"; the Shadows' version perfectly captured this mood, grabbing the attention from the outset as Hank Marvin's guitar emits not a shriek, but certainly an ear-catching yelp. The band heightened the air of mystery by recording the song at midnight at a time when the Abbey Road studios were normally, conscientiously locked up at ten pm (the age of all-night Beatles sessions was still years off in the future). The studio's owners, EMI, were horrified by the group's unconventional request, but were amply repaid when the single soared to number five in Britain in November 1960.
MINT:
Brand new, possibly sealed, with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. Cover and any accompanying items in perfect condition.
EXCELLENT:
May show some signs of having been played, but with very little lessening in sound quality. Cover etc. might be slightly worn.
VERY GOOD:
Obviously well played, but no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, with no major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD:
Sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents may be folded, scuffed, split at the spine, discoloured, etc.
FAIR:
Just about playable, poorly cared for with considerable surface noise even jumps. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.
POOR:
Will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
BAD:
Unplayable, possibly even broken, only of use as a collection filler.
