Mono vinyl box re-emerges as a coloured vinyl offering

Back in July, SDE informed you of a forthcoming vinyl repress of The Rolling Stones in Mono from ABKCO Records. It all went a bit quiet and this was never officially confirmed, although now it finally is and there’s a surprise bonus to boot! This 16LP vinyl box set of The Rolling Stones‘ albums from 1963 to 1969 will now be reissued in January next year, and unlike the original vinyl box, first issued back in 2016, this repress will offer 16 coloured vinyl records.

This long out-of-print collection (Discogs prices start at over £600) brings together 14 studio albums plus Stray Cats, a compilation of songs from singles and EPs issued in the 1960s. In total, The Rolling Stones in Mono delivers 186 tracks, 56 of which, when issued in 2016, “had never before been heard in mono since the advent of the digital age.”

The Rolling Stones in Mono spans the era between 1963 and 1969 when most rock and pop recordings were originally mixed to mono, and as we know with The Beatles, stereo was often an afterthought, often completed far more quickly than its mono counterpart. This doesn’t mean mono is always ‘better’ than the stereo versions, but it can regularly be the case, with mono often more ‘powerful’ than a hastily mixed, and sometimes dubiously panned, stereo version.

The vinyl box starts at the band’s 1964 debut and runs through to 1969’s Let It Bleed and includes the US and UK versions of both Out of Our Heads and Aftermath. The Stray Cats compilation (think The Beatles’ Mono Masters) is a double vinyl LP, which means this is a 16LP vinyl box set.

The Rolling Stones in Mono was mastered by engineer Bob Ludwig and the albums are all pressed on 180g coloured vinyl. The records come packaged in an unusual outer box with a ‘wraparound’ flap at the top with a magnetic clasp. Inside is a 48 page booklet with photos and an essay by David Fricke
