Description

My favorite song on this record is definitely the title track Stop. It has a darker sounding, almost Buzzcocks feel to it. I had no luck finding any info on The News online but, I got lucky and Tracked down Nate Mountel who played drums and he was kind enough to give me this history on the band. News (no definitive article) was Paul Trupin (guitars, vocals, songwriting), Steve Hershberger (lead guitar), Peter Alexander (bass guitar), Jim Woody (keyboards, percussion) and Nate Mountel (drums). Carol Shloss (incorrectly listed as Shless) played a bass line on Stop that was later replaced by Peter. Carol also played the insistent drone keyboard note on Stop which earned her a liner credit.The band formed in 1978 and performed around the midwest from 1978 to 1980. News produced two records and were included on a compilation LP. The Stop EP and another single on a limited press run were released on the Waldo Records label. Most of the band lived in the Waldo Apartments in downtown Cincinnati, hence the name. News also had one piece titled Experimental Animals included on an LP produced by C.A.G.E. (Cincinnati Artists Group Experience), which featured various area artists.Nate Mountel left the band late in 1980. The rest of the band reformed with slightly different personnel as The Fourth Estate, but had a brief career. Paul and Jim moved to San Francisco to form a group called Pray for Rain. Paul died in 1995. Nate didn't know what became of the other players. Until I was contacted... Peter Alexander said...

Hey! I'm the Peter Alexander mentioned here. When I moved out of my house on Hollister Street in Cincinnati, five thousand of these STOP EPs got buried there as the house was torn down. I went on to play in The Auburnaires.
