  Be prepared for last minute snipers. So why are promotional, advance and test pressings better?

   Well, in the case of sound quality, they were most often pressed on virgin vinyl, and in limited batches. The presses used to make records become corrupted with small flecks of vinyl after many pressings, and the smaller the batch, the less of these contaminants there are to make the random ticks and pops you sometimes hear even on a brand new record. There is also the collectibility of these records, and the relatively low numbers of these made in comparison to commercial pressings.
