Now on new clear double vinyl LP, Rhino Records set about anchoring Peter Jackson's take on Middle Earth in megaphonic orchestral depth. Howard Shore's The Fellowship Of The Ring soundtrack took the second instalment in the Lord Of The Rings film saga to the next sonic level: recorded with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, it fuses sweeping leitmotifs with intimate woodwinds and choir textures, where each of the film's cultures and characters - be they orc, elf, hobbit or human - is given its own musical identity, from the pastoral warmth of the Shire to the brooding tension surrounding the Ring. 'The Breaking Of The Fellowship' and 'The Council of Elrond' especially wove warmly-pulled strings, brass and timpani through cinematic peaks, while subtle percussion and solo instruments evoke quiet, reflective moments of elven grace or hobbit innocence.
