“The Jazz Messengers at the Café Bohemia Volume 2” Blue Note BLP 1508.
This is the original Van Gelder-etched (“RVG”), deep-groove, flat-rim mono pressing of “The Jazz Messengers at the Café Bohemia Volume 2” on the Blue Note Records 767 Lexington Ave NYC labels of Blue Note BLP 1508. “Ear” or “P” present in deadwax.
Get a taste of that original Blue Note first pressing magic. No reissue will ever sound as good.
Under direct light, this heavy vinyl has non-feel-able hairline marks on both vinyl sides. Side 1: Glossy, clean, no feelable marks; paper sleeve impressions visible but do not sound (see photos). Side 2: two small feelable marks that do not sound. Good gloss. Paper sleeve impressions visible but do not sound (see photos). This LP is largely silent. A low-level pop or tick can be heard occasionally. Side 2, track 1: features a raucous percussion workout; the most played track on the album, contains loud pops and ticks. The pops diminish 1/3 in, and disappear ½ way into the track. The rest of side 2, as most of side 1, is clean. No distorted instruments, good tone. Both labels clean and clear. Side 1 label obviously glued over another label. The music signal from piano, bass, reeds, brass and drums is strong, rich and clear, and full of tone. A dynamic and powerful sounding LP. An early and rare, pre-1958 Flat Rim disc.
COVER: The 47 West 61st St., NYC 23 cover is free of seam splits. Spines are worn, middle of top seam feathered (see photo). Front cover is slightly discolored; but excellent gloss. Back cover clean, moderate age discoloration; handwritten “2365” top left; two small stamps top right. Minor peeling length of left spine. Corners slightly worn, lower right wrinkled. No tears, no tape. Personnel includes Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Kenny Dorham, Doug Watkins.
This LP was play-tested on a high-end system consisting of Music Hall MMF-7.3 turntable/Ortofon Bronze cartridge/Music Hall Moo Mat, Heed Audio Elixir integrated amplifier, Heed Quasar Phono stage and Quad S2 speakers.
