Most of my vinyl comes from my own collection and is in great, collectible condition. If not, I'll clearly describe the possible flaws or scuffs. Appr. 90% of my records are EX to Mint-. This collection contains many rare German and essential Kraut, Dutch psych and garage, UK and US progressive and folk, early electronic and psychedelic records from the period 1967 to 1975. Dinosaur Swamps
After a promising debut, the American brass-rock band from Chicago, less famous than another well-known brass-rock band from Chicago, decided to take a step further in experimentation. The album is very progressive, with many different elements in different songs and sometimes in the same songs. This blend makes the album uneven, so it seems strange for many, who can't grasp the great moments or simply can't enjoy the constant changes.

Dinosaur Swamps is the second Flock work with the same lineup, featuring the well-known violinist Jerry Goodman, who would become famous in the fusion group Mahavishnu Orchestra. His violin is always a highlight in the songs, but all the band was stretching their potential here.
The opener, Green Slice, is a short instrumental doing the psychedelic-avant thing, with sound effects, organ drone and brass. Then comes Big Bird, a very upbeat song, that blends brass-rock with bluegrass, with excellent fiddling by Goodman, good brass work and a funkish guitar riff. The song breaks into a jazzy saxophone and violin solo, with superb bass. Strange combination, excellent result.

The next song is more varied and more progressive. Hornschmeyer's Island. The song starts with great guitar riff and soft vocals in the verses. Then the song explodes in a brass-rock frenzy with weird vocals, and returns to the verses, with beautiful violin and flute with the guitar riff. After another chorus, a jazz instrumental interlude with good brass, flute and violin soloing. The jazzy riff changes, with insane bass lines (Jerry Smith was really good), good guitar riff and insane violin solo by Goodman. The song has another verses and chorus to end it.

Lighthouse is more straightforward rock, but with a excellent guitar work, including a psychedelic guitar solo, good bass, drums and brass interplay. The rest of the song is typical brass rock, with good bass and guitar riff. With Crabfoot, the longest song of the album, comes more experimentation. The song starts in a fast pace, with a good bass and organ riff and extensive use of brass. The song has many different solos and some rhythm changes. Then the song has an organ, brass and violin solo, with insane bass and exciting percussion (maracas and congas) and a drum solo, which ends with weird backward tapes and sound effects. The song is really insane.

The next song is the best of the album, in my opinion. Mermaid has a beautiful folk acoustic guitar arrangement, with classical bits mixed with jazz bands from early XX century, plus ministrel-like singing a kind of weird nursery rhyme and odd rhythm. If you are reading this review, you are most probably thinking "what is this reviewer talking about?". This song is exactly like that. Love it or hate it. I love it. The last song, Uranian Sircus, starts with mad laughter, then has different riffs, some circus musical references in the chorus, and many changes through the song. It has a very good flute solo in the middle, some jazzy parts with insane bass and violin, alternating with brass rock riffs, making it very unusual as well.

Overall, the album has too much in too feel length and it is hard to please everyone with an album like that. To make it worse for them, they released a single with Mermaid on the A side and Crabfoot on the B side, making sure it would never reach the charts. So the band unfortunately split went on an hiatus, after Jerry Goodman left to Mahavishnu Orchestra. Anyway, the album is great, progressive and experimental, highly recommended to prog fans. But I can't blame those who do not enjoy it, because of its uneven nature and its the kind of album that you should try before you buy.
