The Eagles. HOTEL CALIFORNIA (Asylum 1084 – 1976). By 1976, The Eagles had two Number One singles to their credit (“Best of My Love” and “One of These Night”) but the critics continued to be less than enamored with their sound, lyrics and whatever else they could find wrong. Village Voice sang this album’s praises: “this is their most substantial if not their most enjoyable LP.” Band member Don Felder described their songwriting process as “You are trying to create something that will be a mark of its time.” Mission accomplished. Number One hits “Hotel California” and “New Kid in Town,” #11 hit “Life in the Fast Lane,” multiple Grammys, and an elevated rock n’ roll status which eventually led to their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
