Original very early 1st US Mono pressing of The Doors’ 2nd studio album “Strange Days” released by Elektra Records on September 25, 1967. It’s practically impossible to find a copy of this album that would be pressed at the Monarch, Los Angeles pressing plant. The majority of the copies were pressed at the Columbia Records, Pitman, Allentown and Terre Haute plants. As a rule, after the playback, the Monarch copies tend to remain in a private collection due to its well-balanced mix. Unlike the 1966 session when The Doors debut album was being recorded, during the recording of “Strange Days” engineer Bruce Botnick used a then cutting-edge 8-track recording machine. There’re also a few more details that highlight this copy among the others. First of all, it's the original factory shrink wrap with a large clear “The Doors Strange Days” album title hype sticker on the front. The sticker, just like the Mono cover, contains a misprint in the form of a Stereo “EKS-74014” catalog number, which is located at the bottom right corner on the sticker and on the cover’s spine. 1st print gold Elektra Records labels with the Monarch 2.75” pressing ring and characteristic Monarch font with the “EKL-4014” catalog number and side number located together on the right from the spindle hole. Pay attention to one more unique feature of the Monarch pressing. Unlike the other Mono pressings, the Monarch pressing not only has the gold background but also contains the “®” trademark not on the left but on the right of the large “E” logo. This rare Monarch copy contains the original Elektra Records logo gold-white inner sleeve that came with the earliest Monarch pressing copies instead of the custom inner sleeve with a photo of the band. Very early 1st Monarch pressing vinyl with the following matrix numbers:

Side 1 – EKL 4014A (Mon) “MR in a Circle” Δ11089 (Ray Hagerty's signature); Side 2 – EKL 4014B (Mon) “MR in a Circle” Δ11089-X (Ray Hagerty's signature). The vinyl of this copy contains all of the identifiers of the Monarch plant including the “(Mon)” abbreviation, “MR in a Circle” stamp and Delta (△) numbers in the runout grooves on both sides. Concurrently with the release of the album, the New York based company Nipper Music Company published a sheet music of the “People Are Strange” hit single, which at the time reached the 12th place in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. This 1st issue containing the notes and lyrics of “People Are Strange” serves as a wonderful bonus to the extremely rare 1st Monarch pressing copy of the “Strange Days” masterpiece album.

The cover remaining in the original factory shrink wrap is graded as Near Mint Minus. I grade the vinyl as strong Very Good Plus. It retains its beautiful factory gloss only having some very light non-feelable surface hairlines as well as scuffs from the original inner sleeve which don't affect the beautiful playback in any way. The labels are very clean, scuff- and wear-free, and are in Excellent condition only having a couple of very light spindle marks that can be seen under a strong light source. The vinyl sounds great having punchy and vivid sound, with only some very light occasional static which most likely could go away if the record was professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. The original Elektra inner sleeve is in Near Mint Minus condition and doesn't have any splits or tears. The rare "People Are Strange" sheet music is in great vintage condition.
