Description
First released for the autumn market in 1970 - this QUALITY pressing comes just 1 year later for XMAS 1971. Gone are the red labels - and these are super hard to find. Elektra are now using BUTTERFLY labels. But what is good about this copy is it is just 1 year behind those pristine masters. And to top that - THEY ARE PRESSED HEAVY. This product is just total CLASS from start to finish. Note that the labels have some of that claret colouring you find on early Butterfly. There's no 'Made In UK' or mention of Warners on the labels. This copy was pressed for the Xmas-71 market - note that Morrison had passed just a couple of months prior. The vinyl comes housed in an original MacNeill solid card cover [not like later flimsier offerings]. Elektra symbol in blue top left with mention of mono/stereo cartridge care [which you find on the earliest copies]. It mentions '1972' at the foot - the presses would have been running at full tilt for the Doors from Q4'71 through to Q1/Q2'72 and so the printers went with '72 [kinda makes sense]. We also have both original inners. So, we're 100% genuine and 100% complete. There's a USA Elektra Butterfly inner from the seventies too.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex+) Sweet lordy...this a cracker of a copy. It has only seen very slight use and someone's been extremely careful with it. That original lustre is still exhibiting. Under close inspection I could only make out a couple of lightest marks per side - nothing remotely troublesome. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT+ level of playback with two slight deviations. The Doors were absolutely 'top of their game' - and the recoding quality is nothing sort of astonishing. Hats off to Elektra they've captured it supremely well. It's like you're sat in the audience. So, I cannot rate this copy highly enough. Ok, to be frank I am totally biased on The Doors - I fully admit that. BUT...no kidding.. this copy is UNBELIEVABLE for audio. Never heard anything even close to this. Just perfect throughout. Can barely make out a whisper even into those silent crowd murmuring passages. Perhaps one solitary tick on side 2 and one again side 3. A couple of crackles in a couple of spots per side. If you wanna hear Jim's mumbles low in the mix. Or Robby ripping it up...hell don't compromise....expect THE ABSOLUTE BEST RENDITION humanly possible. And, remember, parts of this recording ARE VERY LOWKEY. This is just 10/10 all the way BABY! Does not put a foot wrong - across FOUR SIDES. An archive copy you can marvel at for the rest of your days. FINAL UPGRADE.
Cover (Ex-) Wow, I really like this cover. Firstly, let me say - the copies from the 1st year are certainly better quality. Sturdy, solid, and flat with smooth surface. That aesthetic is near perfect if it wasn't for Ms Robbins name top left. Now, I haven't gone anywhere near it - and I would advise any potential buyer to do likewise. DO NOT TOUCH! A cover this well preserved is highly impressive - and 'MARION' did a great job. I ain't about to diss her for the name tag! Back and front are exhibiting hardly any surface wear - just one slight crease top right [front]. Interior looks superb - slight crease top right of right panel. Hardly any edge wear and sharp openings. People - this is a thing of beauty! Spine 98% intact - lovely. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
Inners (Vg+) Light ageing. No splits.
