Description
Here for sale is a one-owner copy of this classic 1983 compilation of mid-1960s Garage Rock. Purchased new from Manhattan’s Midnight Records by singer/author Julian Cope, the item was immediately placed for safe-keeping in a thick, clear polythene cover, ensuring that it has remained almost as it left the manufacturer – no rubs, no tears, no abrasions upon its high gloss sleeve. There is, however, some hardly noticeable ring wear on the lower front sleeve, which can only be seen when held up to an electric light.
Both sides of the vinyl have just been played through and listened to carefully. The songs on this album were clearly all taken not from the master tapes, but from original 7” discs supplied by collectors of the genre. The transcriptions are, therefore, often imperfect on account of the state of the 1960s single from which it was copied. Also, the 12” disc itself has become quite marked, so extra careful attention has been paid to the individual tracks:
On Side 1, The Gonn’s wild ‘The Blackout of Gretely’ commences with some glitches that continue into the song itself, but fade soon. Thereafter, the song exhibits a couple of small pops towards its end. Next, ‘Trip With Me’ by The Tides In and ‘Never Mistaken’ by The Debonaires are both clean, though the actual transcription disc itself from which the latter was taken suffers from mild surface noise here-and-there. Similarly, ‘The Special Ones’ by The Shames is clean, save for a single noise on the final chord, which comes from the transcription disc. However, the final three songs of side three are all entirely clean.
On Side 2, The Nomads’ ‘Thoughts of a Madman’ is clean save for one single pop at the very end of the song. Both songs by Things To Come are clean, though the latter was taken from a somewhat crackly transcription disc. Thereafter, every track is clean, save for minor between song pops here-and-there, and one glitch at the very end of the final song.
