THE CHARLATANS Used Vinyl Record Sleeve/Vinyl: VG+/EX+ Record Label: Philips PHS 600-309 1969 hard to find stereo pressing by San Francisco 60s psych band The Charlatans. Condition of jacket: most of the original shrink wrap remains with very light ring wear on the jacket and some dulling of the white parts. Minor rounding of corners. Top and bottom are intact but please study photo of the spine and note 3-inch shred on top third with another smaller one lower down. Group and label names not affected. Small hole on lower right corner (doesn't appear to be cutout related but who knows). Condition of vinyl: Shiny, new looking and quiet. Only minimal surface noise on lead-in tracks, even less on run-out and no pops between tracks or during the music. Labels are pristine. I considered grading it Mint- but few 48-year-old records meet that standard and I like being conservative. The band & the music: The Charlatans were pioneers of San Francisco's psychedelic sound. The helped create Acid-Rock and the fashion of rock and roll meets the old west clothing fad. The Charlatans are often cited by critics as being the first group to play in the style that became known as the San Francisco Sound. Exhibiting more pronounced jug band, country and blues influences than many bands from the same scene, the Charlatans’ rebellious attitude and distinctive late 19th-century fashions exerted a major influence on the Summer of Love in San Francisco. Their recorded output was small, with their first album, The Charlatans, not being released until 1969, some years after the band's heyday. The band is notable for featuring the first commercial appearance of Dan Hicks, later of Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks.Later member George Hunter helped develop the first psychedelic rock posters. Guitarist Mike Wilhelm was one of Jerry Garcia's favorites. Highlights are too many to name, a beautiful country-rock dream "HIGH COIN", a rockin' groover "EASY WHEN I'M DEAD" and a great version of "WABASH CANNONBALL".
