Dave Alvin / Blackjack David - Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab Records MFSL 2-275 (2006)(USA) ...This auction is for an original, factory sealed Double Record on high-quality (Audiophile) vinyl. This record was available in a very limited, numbered pressing of only 1000 and are hard to find still sealed. Originally released in 1998 on Hightone Records, the recording has been recreated by MFSL in spectacular sound and truly sounds incredible.
Dave Alvin earned his crown as "the King of California" the hard way. A fourth-generation Californian, Alvin worked his way through various incarnations in order to arrive at this point. Gleaning from all the genres, Alvin sits firmly upon his throne, creating a brand of music that is intelligent, insightful, and broad in scope. With Alvin at peace with his creative direction, Blackjack David picks up where his previous album, King of California left off in 1994. More electric, Blackjack David almost rocks in places, as on "Abilene" and "New Highway." The title cut, a traditional tune hundreds of years old, is given new life under the deft Alvin touch and a new arrangement. A Renaissance man, Dave Alvin continues to make and record music of integrity.

Produced by Greg Leisz, the album's eleven majestic cuts represent the best of what country and folk are all about--gutsy and real, powerful and brave, no production tricks, just pure, suberbly-crafted music.A striking feature of BLACKJACK DAVID is its use of wide open spaces--each song stretches and breathes, and each story ebbs and swells within a wide dynamic range. The wistful "Abilene" uses harmonium swells and tremolo guitar (courtesy of Leisz, who dips into a wide sonic pallette throughout the album) to propel its nomadic narrative. "Evening Blues," an elegant acoustic number, sticks to gentle, evocative fingerpicking and harmonics, fleshed out with accordion and gentle percussion.
