An exceptionally rare, original 1977 US first pressing of The Blackbyrds' jazz-funk masterpiece, Action. While heavily played copies of this dance-floor favorite are common, finding an authentic 1970s copy completely unopened, flat, and untouched by a stylus for nearly half a century is an absolute collectors' triumph. Preserved flawlessly beneath its original factory shrinkwrap, this unplayed time capsule is a premier find.
Formed in Washington, D.C. in 1973, The Blackbyrds were a group of talented Howard University music students assembled and mentored by legendary jazz trumpet titan Donald Byrd. Under Byrd's elite production guidance, the band became the definitive bridge between traditional jazz, heavy rhythm-and-blues, and deep club funk. Released in 1977, Action represents the absolute peak of their sophisticated, horn-driven rare groove sound. Decades later, the heavy breaks and smooth textures on this exact album became a goldmine for hip-hop golden era producers, sampled by icons like Gang Starr, MF DOOM, and Madlib.
